I wouldn't pitch your old stylus (carry it in your briefcase or purse for emergencies), but it is soft enough for some dust particles to get embedded in it (and some particles are hard enough to scratch the screen). The heavier styli are preferred because you only have to move them in the horizontal plane, they supply all the downward pressure that the Visor needs to recognize a stroke.
The PDA Panache Stylus for HandSpring Visor is the concensus weapon of choice. However, do investigate all your options. For example, I'm considering one of the pen styli (for ergonomic reasons).
Some form of screen protector is an absolute must. I use WriteRights, because I like the feel that I get writing on their textured surface. I also like that they cut down on glare, but I'll be the first to concede that they are way over priced!
