visorphone won't work outside usa

i got this from handspring today. what the heck is this person talking about?
Thank you for contacting Handspring.

When VisorPhone is used with Visor Solo, Visor, or Visor Deluxe, it operates
in a frequency band used only in the United States. However, future Visor
products will be designed to allow the VisorPhone to work in other areas of
the world. There will also be a version of the VisorPhone available early
next year, which will be sold in Canada and will operate at Canadian
frequencies.

If you need further assistance please reply to this email or call
1-888-565-9393.

Regards,
Melissa

The visor phone that is available now will not work outside of the US. It is a single band phone and will only work in North America.

HS is supposed to make a tri-band version of the phone.

This thread says people have used the phone outside the US. (no reports of Canada use) http://discussion.visorcentral.com/...ighlight=europe

That's good to know. It is pretty strange though. I could swear that HS said that they only had the GSM1900 band in it.

Taken from Handspring's VP product page:

quote:
** VisorPhone is a 900/1900 MHz world phone and can be used internationally with a corresponding international roaming service from the respective carrier. Handspring recommends using a Visor Prism, Visor Platinum or Visor Edge handheld with VisorPhone when using the product as a world phone as they are best optimized to run on both the 900MHz and 1900 MHz bands.

There you have it!

Hrm...I could have sworn when it was first released, it was only 1900. There was a huge outcry when upon its first release about it only being single band. Maybe they changed it.

It was and they did. As noted, though, the issue with being used as a world phone now is evidently that the Visor Solo, Basic, and Deluxe don't perform as well with the 900MHz band. Considering the supposed problems in the 800MHz CDPD band with the Minstrels, that's not really surprising.
