Upgrading VDX to work with YadaYada
Following the trailblazing efforts of some early adopters
who posted to this thread, I called Handspring to see whether I could indeed swap my VDX for one that would work with the Minstrel S model (and the YadaYada service). Handspring tech support didn't know anything about this
exchange program, but customer support did. They said that the exchange got you a Visor that was "optimized" to work with the modem, which I took to mean, not an OS upgrade, but a VDX with RF shielding.
Then I called YadaYada with this information to tell them what Handspring told me. (I had called them twice previously and had gotten two different stories about whether a VDX would work and whether it could be exchanged.) This time, the sales rep listened to what Handspring told me and said, yes, it was true. When you get the modem, you can call Handspring and arrange to have your VDX swapped for an "optimized": still OS 3.1 apparently, but with the RF shielding. But he mentioned there was another way to exchange: he said that the modem came with a $50 coupon that could be applied to the trade of your VDX for a Prism (VDX ($250) + coupon ($50) = Prism ($300)). In other words, you can simply swap your VDX fpr a Prism with no money exchanging hands (except for the YadaYada service and modem). Prism has OS 3.5, right? This is probably the source of some of the comments in this thread and others about the VDX being upgraded to 3.5.
Anyway, I ordered the YadaYada modem and service. I'll let you know how it goes, and whether this exchange is for real.
