Question

I live in Cincinnati. The Handspring website states that my zip code 45242 (and all others in Cincy) are not in any plans from the carriers that the VisorPhone can work with. Some curious things are going on here:

1. Cingular is one of the carriers - they also have stores and say they have coverage in Cincinnati.

2. The sales rep on the phone said that Cingular does not use GSM at all.

3. The other carrier near me that can use the VisorPhone is VoiceStream in Columbus (2 hrs. north).

What is the probablity that I can buy a VisorPhone for an account in Columbus, and get it with Nationwide free long distance, and STILL BE ABLE TO USE IT IN CINCINNATI?

In other words, how do I find out if GSM (in general) can work in a particular area, and if it can't, can the VisorPhone still be used in an area like that using another network?

Cingular's technology may depend on location. I know that in Connecticut, they offer 900MHz TDMA, not GSM.

VisorPhone & GSM

I take it that the VisorPhone would not work AT ALL in an area where there was no GSM coverage. I can't even get Handspring to admit to that!

That is correct.

The GSM phone only works where there is GSM coverage.

GSM coverage link

Just found this link...

http://www.wirelessdata.org/maps/coverage.asp

This is beginning to piss me off. How long until the CDMA version is shipped? They are saying 2nd quarter but, man! - get a frickin' move on already!

(Just got my cell phone stolen BTW - good excuse to buy a VisorPhone)
