Posting self portraits and pics as avatars

I have a question for you guys, why do you guys post pictures of yourself in your avatars and/or sig files? Is it conceit?

I just want to know, no flames here.

Stan

I'm sure its cool to do but if it bugs you, go to Profile/Options and say no to showing Avatars (and Signatures) I havent seen them for years and it makes for cleaner and faster loading posts.

I started doing it for 2 reasons:

  • I like seeing other people's photos because it helps me form a concept of them in my mind instead of just knowing them as a handle or name. So I want to give people the same chance with me.
  • My friend sent me the photo I use, and I think it's a pretty good picture of me

I usually switch it up..

this one IS me, and was taken by friend/aspiring photographer. I know it looks pretty bad, but that's because of the squareness & size limits... it's actually not a bad photo aesthetically..

otherwise I dunno, whateva.

Talking Scooby doo...

Good one Shaggy

Just adds a little personalization... adds a little of that something that is always missing online.

That's why the "smiles" are available, to help add emotion to text.

IMHO, Rod

because this is what i see when my dog greets me and it instills such a happy feeling that i thought i'd share it! Life is about being happy, isn't it?

As for other people, i value some people's comments more than usual on this board and it helps to scan down a thread to find what they say by simply looking for a specific avatar (which occasionally makes it difficult when you guys change them!)

Penguins rule. Not too keen on ducks, though.

Yep, and much like The Artist Formerly Known As The Artist Formerly Known As Prince Who Is Currently Known As Prince Again, I am really a symbol.

Cool

I actually find the avatars to be useful to remind me of who is talking. They are easier for me to remember than just the name.

Of course I have a cable modem, so load time is not an issue with me.

Pretty interesting, in that you have a signature!

I don't put picture of myself as avatar, but I do like to have some picture. I agree with what has already been said--it's easier to know who's contributing by scanning avatars. I'm still confused by the new and improved septimus, who not only changed his avatar but threw in a different name!

i like fire. i like to cook.

As the chef in my house, I always love to work in some wine into whatever it is I'm cooking, tip the pan ever so slightly, and get a big *foosh!* wall of flame out of it.

dangerous? sure. tasty? yep. impressive? sure. Folks think you're Emeril's long lost cousin when they see you cooking around a flame like that.

Cooking tip for the day: if you're cooking something in a pan (eg. breaded chicken), just put 1/4 cup of white wine (red meat - use red wine) in the hot pan and let it reduce to half the amount you put in. If you want to impress someone and you're cooking on a stove with a hood and vent, tip the pan slightly AWAY from you toward the gas flame (of course, electric ranges won't work). Add a tablespoon or two of butter and voila.. instant delish sauce.
