Cool What I want in a new visor

Well, I'm glad that I'm not the only person underwhelmed with the new visors. Here is what I would like to see from Handspring in a new Visor :
Color Screen, 320 x 320
OS 4
16 MB Ram
SD memory slot
SpringBoard Slot

Why these items? I think the OS 4 and 16 MB ram are self explanatory. After seeing the color screnn on the Sony Clie I dont think HS could get away with using anything less. The SD memory slot would be great for extral storage. I know that there are memory storage solutions that use the SpringBoard ( I have a couple of MemPlugs myself). The SD memory slot would give us the ability to NOT have to swap out our storage memory when we wanted to surf the web with the OmniSky SpringBoard.

Now how about the Collapsible Silkscreen? Well I could live without this if they use the 320x320 Color Screen.

So, how long am I willing to wait for such an animal? Well I will be giving the new HP and Ipaqs a very close look next month. If there arent any rumors of any new color device coming soon from Handspring by then, I will make a switch to either Sony or one of they new PPCs.

Just my .02

A.D.

I hear where you're coming from. I have owned a Prism for nearly a year now (I ordered mine 3 days after their debut). Overall, I've been happy with it, but as I've stated in other threads, I'm disappointed in Handspring's lack of OS updates/patches. Initially, I was content to wait the remaining year or so until the OS 5/ARM Palms/Visors were available, but as I'm at the end of my desktop computer's useful life (it'll be 6 years in December - take THAT, Moore's Law!), and I'm looking to replace my aging Mac.

What does this have to do with my PDA? Well, obviously my Prism will still be good whether I go with a new Mac or I switch to PC. But should I switch, it opens up the possibilities of the PocketPC platform...and the more Palm/Handspring stays stagnant, the more attractive that nice shiny iPaq looks. So as much as I'd like to say "Viva la Handspring", I don't know for certain if I can wait a glacial age for them to toss us something substantial. I'm committed to my Visor right now (I just picked up a dirt-cheap MiniJam), but 6 months from now...who's to say?

I'm in that same debate... except I picked up an iPaq right when the 3670 came out (64MB RAM). The battery life is absolutely atrocious, but it's apparently something most people who are in love with the iPaq are used to and can deal with. While I would really like a Prism with an ARM-based processor and a higher resoution screen, but I really don't want to have to worry about whether or not one day of all-day use is going to send my unit to the charger before I leave the office.

I'll probably sell the iPaq. I just bought it to see how good the PocketPC's were. Better and worse in various ways. And I'll probably wait for the next great Visor... although I might make a temporary jump to a Sony Cli while I'm waiting.

A sony CLIE 610 with a springboard slot would be fantastic. I'd probably buy two.

It is really worse than the Prism's? My prism, at lowest brightness setting, lasts through about six hours of continuous use. How long does the iPaq last?

olen:

I'd buy that Clie, but only if they fixed the front buttons. :/

I've been looking at the CLIE 610 lately. The screen on it is really nice. If it had a Springboard slot I would buy it. I also dont really care for the thinner form factor that the Edge has. CompUSA just started carrying the HandEra 330, so I spent some time Saturday trying it out. After playing with it for about 10 mins a soft graffitti area is a MUST. The extra screen space makes a huge difference in some applications.

On a slightly different note, has anyone heard anything about the next generation palm's based on the ARM processor? I came across the specs for Motorola's new ARM processor, it looks pretty nice. Just wonder how long it will be before palm can deliver any working devices.

TFT Backlit Display like the Prism (bright bright bright)
320 X 240 Resolution
Thinner Form Factor
Polymer Recharge Batteries for a little longer duration (Like iPaq)
16 Meg Internal Ram
$400 - $449 Price Point
New VisorPhone Module avail that acts as the cover for the Visor (like Treo)

Id love a HS that combines the best of what theyve got individually, that is:
The thinness of the Edge
The shinny colourfullness of the Prism
The Speed of the Platinum
The battery life of the Deluxe.

Other items, such as mp3 or larger screen resolution, i can live without. The issue with the Springboard (cant use mp3 player + Flash adapter) I guess could be resolved with the addition of a CF slot. But definitely, better battery life and color. Battery life really an issue if HS pretends to compete with PocketPCs.

Thumbs up You've got it right on!!

adh you've hit on the nose. That is exactly what I want. The Clie color screen is absoutely amazing. I need 16mb internal ram. I need expandable memory (SD slot) and I am totally hooked on my visorphone and just hate swapping it out for my 8mb module. The virtual grafiti area would be great, but I'd give the other items priority.

I will hang on to my VDX for now and pine away wishing for this perfect Visor to be announced.

I'd actually prefer this be in the standard Deluxe case, I'm not a big fan of the piggy back. What I'd actually like would be the Deluxe form factor with the same groove for your hand in the back that the Prism has. It would of course have to have everything mentioned before (16mb, High resolution, dedicated memory expansion, etc...). It should also have that new 66MHz VZ chip.

I agree with what's been said, but I have a slightly different desire in a new Visor:

Edge form-factor
Color screen
Edge Springboard expansion slot
8 Mb
PalmOS 4 w/ upgradable Flash ROM
Price: less than $350

... and the first new Springboard would be an MMC Expansion Slot module that sits flush with the back of the Visor when installed. If you need to use one of the older, bulky Springboard modules, there's the Edge Adapter, but I think Handspring should push for the thinner module size in the Edge from now on to compete.

after using the clie, hi-res is a must, i would also like the fastest processer available, and 16mb of memory, some sort of built in thing (wireless, mp3 player) would also be nice if it did not affect form

Now that the Prism has dropped to $299, it shouldn't be long until we see the specs for the next color visor. I wondering if it will be introduced before or after the new line of Window CE devices?

Waiting impatiently.........

P.S. I hope it is in the palm 3 form factor. I personally don't care for smaller / thinner form factors.

The Sound of Music

What I want in a new Visor is more audio ability: mp3, wma, rm,ATRC, audible...something.

Am I the only one who wants this?

I've even resorted lately to carrying around my previously unused iPaq 3630 as well as my Prism. The iPaq so that I can listen to mp3 and wma files,as well as Audible books that don't come in formats 2 and 3 for the Audible Advisor (lately it seems like most of the books I want are only in 1 & 4).

I use my Prism for everything else.

If as I recall reading here at VC that Good Technology as well as Innogear have stopped selling music alternatives, then this is the time for the Prisms to have better sound and playing ability. Pocket PCs have it out of the box, Clies have it (sort of) and Palm at least has the bulky player to add on.
