Well I broke down and signed up for the upgrade. Gotta get it into the mail on Monday. This is going to be interesting. I've already made some modifications to my Visor to recharge batteries in the cradle and connected a LED to the TX pin like the TaleLights. Hopefully this wont make it too difficult for Tony.

re:Upgrade

Hi,

I've used Tony's service in the past (twice) and my experiences have been excellent. Being "first" is no
big deal. It only means that you'll have lots of admirers!

I'll prolly get this upgrade as well.

good luck.

Well, my Platinum is on its way to Tony and I'm experiencing separation anxiety already. Time to dust off the old Palm Pilot Professional again. I'll post the results when it returns.

I do not have another PDA to fall back on. Just a Yellow Staples notepad and Bic PEN.. Pleeease hurry back to me my little PDA companion...

Do you all that have had the upgrade find it better than using Memplug or CF .... it would seem that Memplug .. one could continue to upgrade...

then again I guess with this upgrade.one could still use memplug...

I was just looking for feedback as to why use tony verses.. a module...

let me know...

System RAM

TGrier:

The Upgrade that Tony and others have is the best of all tehe options. This is because that upgrade *DOES* add 8 MB of additional RAM to the Visor. This make the system RAM 16 MB instead of the regular 8 MB. With the module options, the system RAM is always 8 MB. Needless to say, there are a lot of restrictions on what you can do and cannot with the module memory options. WIth Tony's upgrade, there are no restrictions on what you can do. You use the additional memory as if it was shipped with the Visor.

Question What about backup module use?

So I assume you wouldn't be able to use the backup module if you have more, or much more than 8MB in that big 16MB RAM memory.

I'm guessing there's not more than 8MB in the Backup module.

If you considering the upgrade, factor in something like the MemPlug and at least a 16 meg Smartmedia card for backups. Works for me.

Arrow Tony has competition

FYI: Competition for palmpilotupgrade.com :

http://www.stnecorp.com/

The price on the Platinum 16mb upgrade is about $9 less expensive than Tony ($119.95 vs. $129). They also do Edge and Prism upgrades too.

I have no idea about the reliability of their service and I could not find any testimonials re: Visors. However, there are Palm users that appeared satisfied. Same 90 day warranty.

no competition

Even though STNE announced the Platinum/Edge upgrades last Thursday they do not provide the service.

I think another co. (Hagiwra?) makes a 16Mb Backup module for less than 2x the price of the 8Mb one.
