Question MEMPLUG and CONTENT CARDS

Hi,
Does anyone know if the MemPlug Memory Module for SD/MMC is capable of accessing the applications on the new SD Content Cards that are showing up for the late model Palm Handhelds.
I understand that I won't be able to store to them (They're ROM) but with the adaptor, could I access the data in these content cards as if I were using them in a Palm?

Thanks for your help.

According to PIT's website, no. Here is what they say on their web page:

"*** MemPlug SD/MMC does not support SD content card ***".

Here is the link to the page.

Thumbs down waste of money

and from what my Palm owner friends tell me, the SD content cards that are available are a waste of money.

They are useful, but expensive (just like Springboards used to be)... hmm ...

Question Thanks but...

Hey all,
Thanks for your input and comments. Before making my initial post I had exchanged email with the manufacturer but we have a definite language barrier. I don't think they quite understand my question. Nevertheless, my take on the situation based on my communication with them is this. When their website states that the SD content card is not compatible with the MemPlug, it is from the understanding that someone using a MemPlug wants to be able to back-up and store data on the SD/MMC card.
Since a content card is ROM it can't be written to and therefore the SD content card is not compatible (with the primary function of the MemPlug). This still does not answer my original question, which is, even if you can't store data or back up on an SD content card, can you access the information stored on one? With Handspring having left us SpringBoard Slot toteing Visor owners for dead, I'm looking for anything that will help extend the life (read: protect my investment) of my PDAs (VDX, PRISM) and their accessories. Since Palm and others (including Handspring) have gone the SD/MMC route it would be nice to have something that will keep us Visor owners in the game a little longer. An SD/MMC interface that reads the new content cards might do that (provided of course there's a content card worth having:-). Beyond the MemPlug, it would be nice to have an SD/MMC interface that would permit the use of accessories that use that interface.
Thanks again,

Steve Dubin

Buy one and try it I'm waiting on a good deal for the Memplug SD/MMC - all of the sudden the price has gone sky high $69-74 . I'm looking for the MMC version mostly because I have 2 128mb MMC cards to use with my MiniJam.

What I'm really looking to see is a SPringboard that lets us use SD I/O cards - that would give us a significant extension of the life of the Visor line!

Gambit! You understand my point exactly.
BTW, I spotted the MemPlug your looking for at
CompUSA, $39.00.
Good luck.

I haven't actually tested with a MemPlug SD module, but I can tell you it's unlikely to work. The apps on content cards actually make use of special launch events generated by PalmOS 4 when an app is launched from an expansion card. The prevents the content from running if it is copied to RAM. Since the PalmOS 3.5 event system doesn't generate (or propogate) those events and since the event system in PalmOS 3.1 isn't even a complete implementation, it's unlikely that the content cards will work on the Visor using a MemPlug.

Pretty Fancy!

Thanks for the insight. I wonder if that is to ensure Plug-and-Play or to ensure copy protection (probably both).

Do you think a software solution can generate these events?

Yes, that would be nice, but isn't it just wishful thinking? If there isn't one out there now, there likely won't be one. Memplug CF only works with type I cards, not Type II or III which are I/O capable.

At this point, since it supports a dead product line, Visor, who is going to put any R&D money into a new product with such a limited potential? Probably only highly specialized applications (read high $$$$$) like medical ones which want to take advantage of the openness of the Springboard platform and its workable size. Try doing micro-miniature development work on the SD card format on a limited budget for a limited customer base!

I know it's wishful thinking but still - I'm allowed to wish (it's Christmas ) But if you look closely at my statement - I wanted to see Secure Digital Memplug with I/O support. It seams to me that SD is the way to go since just about everyone has turned to it (portability and lower power consumptions). Compact Flash has always been only an extension to PCMCIA standard with which since day one has been a power hog.
