If I hadn't paid so much for this infernal contraption and all its accoutrements, I'd drop kick it!!!! I thought I had at least 500k available...I could have sworn the filemover said over 600k free. I was moving 288k document into over 800k free on the module!!! Then the dreaded compacting started....It's toast!!! No hacks, no overclocking, no programs on the module...no haps!

Why do the gods torment me???????

What kind of curse did you get put on you?

I have absolutely no idea why you are having so many corruption errors. Everything that we have tried to eliminate the problem have failed.

I think it's a CompUSA curse...that's where I bought and exchanged the Prism. The first RAM module was from there but this one is direct from Handspring.

The ONLY thing I can think of is PalmTheme may cause the problem. From now on, I'll deactivate that also before going into the file mover application. I put a bunch of database utilities on the Prism so I won't need to go into FAF EXCEPT to move files (I had been using it to delete individual files).

Light candles, cross fingers, sacrifice some small animals and say some prayers...I'm going back in!

What firmware version do you have on the Flash Module?

I received mine recently and realise that Handspring has flashed Version 1.2 into the 8MB Module, which is even newer than the V1.1 that was posted (and now strangely, removed) on the Handspring support pages.

However, I don't think the problem has been solved and now I'm afraid to overfill my 8MB module lest it happen again....

How much space did you have left on the Visor (not the Module) when you were transferring the 500K file?

I isolate PalmTheme as a problem app. I'm not sure how it conflicts, but it's installation relates to problems with apps on my internal memory, It appeared to have corrupted some databases and caused these executed apps to reset the Visor.

Don't get me wrong..nice visual effects with PalmTheme, but not worth my trouble or memory allocation. Perhaps it has been updated to address such errors (if they're acknowledged.) I haven't bothered looking.

BackdropGC conflicts?

Okay...dump PalmThemes (a shame). What about BackdropGC? It's out of beta. Takes a lot more space but will TrapWeaver and/or BackdropGC cause problems?

Anyone using these?

compact woes

I used to have this problem, but (touching lots of wood) it hasn't happened for a while. Can't put my finger on it, but I'm sure dumping Afterburner and Switch Hack from my Prism altogether helped with overall stability. Also, I was shy of moving anything onto the module with less than 1Mb free. I've been a bit daring since purchasing JackBack and realising there were no problems with writing to the module with that. Now down to 400kb on the module, compacting with no problems, running Trapweaver and Quickbits, 19 hacks, including ClockupDA.

One thing I still avoid is having the machine in the cradle whilst compacting - not sure why, but every crash before happened on the cradle and not one compact has happened off the cradle. Maybe coincidence turned into superstition, but seems to work for me. btw, 8Mb module, v1.2.

Just got off the phone with Tech Support on this issue...

On copying another Mapopolis map to the 8M flash module (about 900k, 1.4M free), FileMover said it was compressing, then corrupted the module.

So I called Handspring Tech Support, and they told me that this was a known issue with File Mover 1.2; you need at least twice the space available on the module as the file you're moving takes up. They're still pinning it down, they said, and there's no expected date yet for the fix.

So presumably it'll be better with v1.3...

Okay...so why is the module smart enough to just give an error message when you try to overload it but crashes when you try to 'just' load it?

Anyone think they really have some idea??? Three weeks ago, they denied knowledge of the issue...spoke with tech support, got sent back to customer support and sent a new module.

I am feeling your pain...

I have wasted my whole morning trying to get my handheld back together again! I am tellin' ya, this compacting problem is the pits. I have followed everyone's advice from previous threads, I am still having major probs. I am using Hagiwara's 16MB module, presumably with version 1.2 of FileMover... I am strugglin' over here. I may have to just accept the fact that I will have to leave 1-2 MB free on my module. Its weird, sometimes I have tons of memory both internally and on the module and it crashes. On other occasions, it actually compacts successfully. Go figure....

Well...

I only have like 50kb's on my module and it compacted fine two days ago. I don't think the memory issue is in the module, I think that the memory issue may be in the internal memory.

See! See!! That's what I'm talkin' about!!! There's no rhyme or reason to this thing! Didn't someone post that Handspring is now acknowledging this as a problem and claimed that it has to do with having twice the amount of free memory on the module as the size of the file you're trying to move.

Personally, I think they're just blowing smoke...

Ahhh...feeling better now!

Hey Doc

I forgot about this thread. No problems so far with BackdropGC on my prism.

As far as the memory goes, keep an eye on what you're moving, where you're moving it to, and how much space is available.

You may want to try what I did. Hotsync. Remove (do not permanently delete) your backup folder from your user folder on your desktop. Hard Reset, and then install the apps that are most important. HotSync. By taking a good look and evaluation of what I truly need on there, I now find that have tonnes of room to play around with on my internal and module memory.

I hope your theme scheme works out!

..and just because I say PalmTheme was a bum program for me, don't get discouraged. It was a nice feature before I noticed conflicts with programs of greater importance to me. I'm sure many have differing results. I really like the "Blister" and "Mac" themes. Those were pretty cool. <insert Beavis and Butthead chuckles here>
