so i tried a search and came up with every post ever posted on vc, and felt i didn't want to wade through tthe morass...

anyway, will one of you kids who does such a thing (imac @ home, dell lattitude @ work) tell me if there's anything special i should know? i'll use palm desktop on both...

Nothing Special

Syncing with Palm Desktop on Mac and PC is nothing special. I have a PB G3 and a Compaq Windoze 98 machine (and also Virtual PC on the Mac) and all get along fine!

Its only when you start using things like web calendar syncing that you will find things to be different.

And oh yes..
Mac syncs do not do Expense and Mail with builtin conduits. There are other threads on this here or at http://www.macfixit.com

Can't Synch Visor to iMac

Yes, I am sad and angry at not being able to synch my Visor with my iMac at home. At work with an IBM laptop it synchs fine. When I push the Hot Synch button there is a connection, but when the identifying User starts it just hangs and hangs and hangs and eventually times out. The Set Up is a bit confusing. Should I have both Local and USB checked? But if I do, I get an error message saying that the Serial Port Monitor failed (error 1, 2, or 3) which should be memory. So I increased the memory allocation to the Serial Monitor but that does not help. I have MacOS 9.0. Can anyone help? this is very frustrating.

i haven't gotten my set-up set up yet, but i've been syncing with my imac for over a year...

my setup is to usb only. i've also disabled the serial monitor on startup so i have to enable it every time i open hotsync manager.

anyway, try these, in order...

if you have os9 make sure you have the latest hotsync and palm desktop software installed... (if you got your visor less than 6 months ago, you're probably ok...)

allocate more memory to the serial monitor, the hotsync manager, and the conduit manager.

try a soft reset of your visor while in the cradle.

a workaround has been talked about (tho' i think the latest versions of hotsync and desktop have fixed it) of moving your backup folder to the desktop before you sync. (apparently the hang time at the beginning of the sync is something like matching your visor to the backup folder assigned it on your mac) then you will create a new backup folder in your visor folder... but this is a pain if you sync alot (like me).

if none of this works, i'm stumped.

did you have your laptop or mac first, by the way.... or both at the same time, and this is a result of total incompatibility?

Still frustrated

Thanks Bear for those tips. I will try them when I have some time. I spent most of today (Sunday) messing around with this and in the end I was back where I started. I found that If I deleted everything called "Palm" then reinstalled the Palm Desktop and Hot Synch stuff I could synch...up to a point... and that was when it timed out trying to back up a large file (the book "Timeline" to be exact). When I deleted large files from the Visor it fianally synched and backed up everything. but,, then I couldn't synch a second time! what a lot of Cra*!
To answer your question I think I used the IBM first. But I didn't always have these problems. I got the Visor nearly a year ago. I tried the new updates, but they don't work any better. so, what about those Win CEdevices?
My trusty Newton MP2100 looks better and better. I thought that Apple was working closeley with Palm. What are they doing exactly? Nothing to benefit this loyal customer and stock owner.
Anyway... thanks for your help. when I get more energy I'll try your suggestions.

BobMcD-Try turning off your Backup conduit

The Backup Conduit on the Mac w/USB has a problem. It will sync the first time and after that it take very long. With my PB G3 and VDX it takes exactly 59 seconds at the User Recognition window and then it syncs fine. I even use the IR on the PB occasionally without much problems.

So all you have to do is go to your conduit manager and turn OFF the backup module and make it default.

You can use some other tool like BackupBuddy ( or as I do, occasionally sync in Virtual PC) to store all the apps on the VDX.

You should not have any further problems - please post if you do.
And yes, we are all waiting for an Apple PDA.

Yes, I am sad and frustrated again. I turned off the Back-up conduit, but that did not solve the problem. I have deleted several apps which might not be up to snuff, but that did not help either.
These wonderful devices are supposed to make our lives easier, not more complicated. This is the worst experience I have had with any PDA, ever. Maybe its time to give up on Apple and Palm and bow in the direction of Microsoft Mecca in Belleview, WA.

Also check your desktop and Hotsync version

Hi Bob,
JHromadka may have your solution - but check your software versions:
Palm Desktop: 2.6
Hotsync: 2.6.1
Visor OS had a firmware upgrade which you could download.

if you either loose your internet connection (dial-up) or if there is something wrong with your cookies file.
It has happened to me enough times that I now write it in my Stickies notpad first and then copy it over if the post is long!

So tell us, did you get Hotsync working .. the suspense is killing me :-)

Yes, the good news is that I did succeed by downloading the Desktop 2.6.1 with the Hot Synch Manager. The key then, was to find that there are three choices in the Setup for Local Connection and the plain USB is what works. So far today I have been able to synch with both the iMac and the IBM. So, all's well that ends well. But we will see if this success is a lasting solution. Many thanks to all who have helped to solve this problem.

Yes..the port choice for USB is bizarre!

Hi Bob,
Glad to know you are syncing happily now!

I too find it unusual that the setup requires the Palmconnect extensions but then uses the standard Handspring USB port selection. Palmconnect shows up too but does not work - weird!
