My Nokia 8290 came today! I followed the IRlink manual and made sure I did everything (I think ), but every time I hit the connect button in the network prefs I get a Fatal Exception. IRlink starts up and it shows IRDA as the connection method, but then the error appears and I have to reset. I'm sure this is a conflict on the Visor side (IRLink was able to detect the phone just fine), but I'm not sure what the problem is. Any ideas?

I made sure my hackmaster hacks were disabled. Any other known software conflicts?

This is really starting to bug me. I deleted everything to see if I could get just the IRlink to work. I think it started to. So then I went to put everything back from my backup module and hit "backup" instead of "restore" (yes I also confirmed the warning message, stupid stupid stupid), so everything was erased and I spent the last hour restoring things from my computer, uuugggghhhh. Glad I didn't do that while on vacation .

I'm still not any closer to figuring this out, I could just be overlooking something simple...

Yet another reply from myself...

I downloaded beamsync since I still can't get IRLink to work (I would still like it to use it though), and was able to connect to the phone, but I got an error message of 1105 after it tried to dial. I should be able to do this without the datastream service, right??? If that isn't what the problem is, then it is yet another mystery. If anyone who has successfully connected a Visor Dx and a Nokia 8290 could please help me here, I'd really appreciate it!

(forgot to mention my service is with Voicstream)

Lemonhead, I have an 8290 and a vdx (os 3.1). I don't recall having any problems like you're describing. If you do a search for 8290 in these forums, you should get a lot of helpful information. Most important is that you do NOT need to install all of the files included in the Palm Irenhance upgrade. This is clearly explained in the IRLink documentation.

As far as the datastream service I don't have the datastream service and am able to connect to my existing ISP. I've heard a couple other accounts of people needing to subscribe to the datastream service in order to get the setup to work. I'd try for a little longer and subscribe as a last resort. Just keep in mind that the IRLink is only a 30 day trial.

I'm in the process of setting up a simple web page that explains the whole process of connecting to an ISP using the vdx/8290 combination. I'll post the link as soon as I finish.

Ok, I re-installed IRLink and some of the other files. It seems to work now (I don't have a clue why). When dialing I get an error on the phone side that says something like "Check operator services." I'm thinking there is either a problem with my ISP (trying to use Juno), or it has something to do with the datastream, but I'm not sure.

Thanks for your help so far.

I've double and triple checked my Juno info and that isn't the problem.

So something is up with the phone. I'm going to wait a couple more days to see if it starts to work and then I'm going to call Voicestream up and tell them to enable the data service. I'm waiting because my voicemail still hasn't started to work, supposedly everything works after 24 hours of activation, but things might be going slow on their end.

Speaking of voicemail, in the Voicestream users guide it says to dial 221 from your phone. Is that the right number or does it need a * or # in front of it?

i have to dial *123 (i'm in nyc)

as to the error, as with jscalia in other threads, i find it strange that you'd have to enable datastream service... i din't have to, and it looks like lmidnight didn't either. why is the service not standard i wonder?

lennonhead,

Did you solve the Voice Stream "Check operator services" issue? I'm getting the same message. Do you have any suggestions? Of course Voice Stream CS is telling me that I have to have DataStream to access data calls. This doesn't sound right, I've connected without DataStream in the past with my Visor Phone.

Regards,
Jim

Sorry for not replying to you before, but I didn't have any info for you. Anyway, for anyone who happens to stumble upon this thread there is another thread that hopefully has all of the answers: http://discussion.visorcentral.com/...?threadid=11144
