Question

I am running Windows 95, but unfortunately my comouter would run too slow with 98. There has got to be a way to still use the USB cradle. Does someone have this answer?
And where can i find it if it's a program?

According to Handspring's developer documentation, the USB cradle is supported only by Windows 98. It says the USB support in Windows 95 is not sufficient to use the USB cradle.

So, you either will have to upgrade your PC, or buy the serial cradle instead.

While that is what the manual says, the statement isn't entirely true. You can get support for the USB with an upgrade to Win95 but it depends on what version you're using and the age of your machine. That said, most of the reports I've heard from folks who have attempted it say the connection is shaky at best. One or two have said they've experienced no problems at all. Check out MS.com for the service pack and details. Good luck!

Here's the URL: http://support.microsoft.com/suppor...s/Q196/6/61.ASP that talks about the OEM release (2.1 and 2.5) which support USB on
Win95.

Thumbs down

If your PC is too slow to support Windows 98 than I'll bet it does not have a USB port. So then, you will need to install a card with USB.

Is it really worth all the time and cost - with the potential for a failure just for USB? USB is nice but the Palm folks have used serial for a long time.

I suggest you pass on USB for now and take advantage of that when you next replace your PC.

It does have a USB...I wonder why they would put it there if no one using win95 can use it.

And the answer is: b/c M$ is dumb. They got ahold of this new-fangled USB technology, then realized that their decade-old 16 bit kernel was fscked up and wouldn't work work with their equally buggy USB code. Rather than fix their error, they spent a year issuing updates, then gave up and released '98.

Since their weren't many USB devices then (due in part to lack of OS support) there wasn't a lot of customer demand for USB, and thus little pressure on M$ to fix their code. Now that USB is here and Win98 is out, M$ no longer needs to support their '95 customers...they just need get them to shell out more $$$ for '98.

Nicholasr-

Are you sure that your machine would run slower w/ 98? I'm running 98 and I didn't notice any decrease in speed when I upgraded.

CMPNet even says that machines will run a little faster (hit the Performance link off of http://www.cmpnet.com/win98/upgrade.html for this reference)

And your Visor sure will synch faster under 98, if that's the only reliable way to get USB going.

Not that I'm a big MS rah-rah or anything, but it might be a good idea to consider the '98 upgrade.
