IR Sync with laptop

I just received a laptop at my new job and have been trying to sync via IR. When I set the sync for infrared I get an error message saying that the IR COM port needs to be configrured.

This is a Toshiba Satellite with Windows ME.

The port works because I can get a connection between the laptop and Prism for file transfer, but I can not get a HotSync connection.

Any ideas?

You need a special program for the Visor to be able to sync via IR

There is one called IRLink, but I think there are also freeware programs around

I'm not so sure. The VDx with OS 3.1 needed 3rd party software but I'm not sure that the Prism with OS3.5 does. I'm pretty sure I IR synced my CLIE 710 when it still had OS 3.5 on it.

Regardless, hloakes has another problem with the IR port on the laptop. Or that's how I read the post anyway - that's where you're getting the '...port needs to be configured' message, right?

I think the port is working because when I put the Prism next to the IR port, they indicate that there is a connection. I even tried sending a file, both the Prism and the computer recognized that it was sending, but it never finished.

So, I think the port is working, but it is not configured for the Visor and I need to know what to do to configure it. There are not many settings in the "Wireless Link" folder.

You also need to configure your Hotsync app on the PC for IR sync.Maybe this will help:

I only have experience with PalmOS 3.1, where you need extra software on the handheld to enable IR hotsyncing.

I tried the IrLink program and it crashes my Visor. The Windows ME does not have a configuation option like the one in the Link. It has something called "Wireless Link" and does not have many options for settings or configurations.

Last night I sent a file from the laptop to the Prism with no problem, but when I send one from the Prism to the laptop, it says it is sending, but it never finishes.

I'm not sure what the problem is but I really don't think you need 3rd party software. And I'm certain that IRLink won't run on OS 3.5.

Sorry I can't be more help.

Did you set the Hotsync app on the PC to listen to a connection on a COM port? Otherwise it will ignore the IR signal coming from the Visor.

I am not sure whet you mean. I did go into setup and select a com port. I have tried both options Com 3 and Com 4, but it still does not work.

You have to specify which connections the hotsync application on the PC should intercept. IR is treated as a serial connection.

Right-click on the Hotsync icon in the systray (Windows task bar) and check "Local serial". From your previous post it is not clear if you did that.
