Well, i can't think of a site offhand..
here's a very quick and dirty (and possibly inaccurate, but what the hell) summary:
SMS (Short Message Service) is basically an outgrowth of the old school paging networks. When they started getting beefy, they realized that they could send more than just numbers across to pages. So folk started to be able to send short messages to each other.
When the Phone networks started taking over, they added this functionality to take customers. It essentially allows you to quickly send a short text message (less that 133 characters, IIRC) to a phone via a web form, email address, or another phone. It's very fast, like instant messaging, but less interactive, like email. You don't have to be "online" in order to use it because it works over the phone company's networks, so you don't use your "minutes" doing it.
I find them convenient because I'm often unable to talk on the phone yet would still like to be able to receive (and even send) information (i.e in class). I also prefer it over email for quick messages because they go to the person, usu.
