So, does the jack improve the quality of the sound? For example, my TealMovie .Wav's are jumpy and low quality. Does the jack make the sound stereo?

ya the sound is actually really good..I mean you can play with the compression settings to get better sounding files when you creat tealmovies....but it does sound good. Actully i even think its full stereo output , in a couple teal movies it sure sounds like its panning..the first thing i tried was the F-15 movie for teal movie ...and the soundtrack seems to be panning...but the audio is good quality audio , i think its just hindered by that weak visor speaker.

I put a headphone jack on my VDX! its a tight sqeeze-- the deluxe has much less space insidefor that sort of thing, not being as thick and all. But i I ran wires up to the springboard slot and put the headphone jack in the SB protector. Unfortunately, I cant put a picture up rigth now because my digicam wont connect to my comp, and the eyemodule is obviously out of the question(think about it)

It was easy. the sound is excellent. I hoked up tealmovie, and converted some of my mp3s to waves and then to PDBs. One song is about 1.3 megs or so. the quality is terrible, but still abotu 20 times better than the original piezo.

Pics will come eventually. Sonce there is no space for a proper headphone cpnnector inside the vdx, I wil either install a mini-connector, or make the springboard protector into a 'soundboard'

The speaker inside the VDX is different than the prism. its mounted on the cuircuit board and is big, black and square with two big contacts on the side. I just solderd wies to each side, and put them to the first two contacts on the tip of the headset jack.

if headphones, why not better speakers?

So, would it then be technically possible to put some better speaker in the case? I've used my VDx as an alarm while camping at SCA events.. Would be a holler to have something powerful enough to wake up the whole encampment :O Mwa-ha-ha-ha..
Seriously, tho, are there such things and what would be the electrical req's etc.. (I can build a PC from scratch, but I have no clue about electronics.. )

Now if I can just figure out how to turn "O Fortuna" from Carmina Burana into a .pdb ...

yes, you could put in a better speaker. but enough about you. lets talk about MY accomplishments!

Ill post more once I get a more elegant solution going.

Sound, using tealmovie, is equivilan to a static-y am station. listenable, but only barely. right now, Ive got two songs and a simpsons sound clip on there to show off. If you use tealmovie, make sure you disable 'audio frequency pre-filter' when encoding the .wav, and turn off the 'volume boost'

Hey Thorin, what is that device in the upper right corner of the second pic? Is that an old Sony Clie?

What did you do for those earphones? it looks like you used your springboard cover somehow...can you put your "sound card" in and out of the visor? that solution looks kinda cool...But i guess you cant use a CF adapter and the earphones at the same time? just wondering

Space for a earphone on a VDX

Hmm -

I suppose I could remove the *worthless* mic plug from the front of my chassis. The only thing that uses it is the visorphone, and since I have no intention of using Voicestream as a cell phone provider (bad prior experience) that area is available.

I suppose the other option would be to externally mount the minijack using JBWeld or something like it, and then sand it smooth. Anyone who manages a neat mod on a VDX please post pics!

Cheers

I put the earphone jack in the empty springboard slot because there is literally, nowhere else it could go. if you wanted it somewhere else, you would have to make yourself a headphone adaptor that adapted to some kind of really small connector.

No, my headphone 'springboard' is not removable. its got wires running to the motherboard. however, I may make this modification soon. I was thinking I would put a little speaker in there too, and maybe a tiny little amplifier cicuit. but your idea of using a CF sprigboard adaptor is intruiging. Were it compressed enough, I think you could fit an entire episode of star trek on a 16mb cf card, or an episode of the simpsons on an 8meg card.
In that case, i would have to find some other kind of connector that i could fit inside the VDX.
