Visorphone free sans Visor?!?

How long has Handspring been offering the Visorphone for free? Last I checked, you had to buy a Visor (and service plan) to get the VP for free. However, upon closer inspection today, they've dropped that little "with Visor purchase" stipulation. Is this new?

I went there today to buy a VP for $50, and was quite pleasantly surprised when my bill came up $0.00. So I hit my 'back' button a coupla times and checked -- Apparently HS is now offering the VPs for free with service activation only. No Visor purchase required. How long has this been?

Not too bad, in my book.

Talking

It appeared for the first time today. They are moving stock. Something wonderful this way comes. Meanwhile I'm there. I'm ordering the phone today.

Making way for the Treo? Or something else entirely? Dropping the price on both the VisorPhone and Prism within the same week makes me hope against hope that a couple of new things may be on their way.

Needless to say, I've no inside information, but I would assume there is a new color Visor and a new phone on the way. Based on observation only.

Might this mean that SprintPCS release of the SB3000 (with 144kbs data speeds in 2002) in right around the corner???

I've been waiting for a CDMA capable visor phone for months

That'd be nice (I was actually thinking of getting that phone over the VP, but some soul searching lead me back to the VisorPhone).

However, I don't think that HS would price reduce a product to make way for a competitor's device (well, a 'sorta' competitor). I think they'd make way for one of their own devices (aka, the Treo). That said, I still hope/believe that the Digital Link will be released relatively soon.

The thing that makes me wonder if the coming device ISN'T the Treo, though, was Palm's recent decision to hold off on the i700 until next year due to wireless market conditions. The market does seem to be a little slow here in the US, and I'd hate to see HS release another device to an unwelcome crowd.

I'm still hoping for a new color Visor, however, but that's for another thread entirely.
