Ok today I recieved my Markspace Serial Cable for my Visor Deluxe. I hooked it all up and tried 3 different terminal applications to see if I could talk to the modem. They ALL worked!! I can type 'AT' and get 'OK' in response, and I can also type 'ATDT3333' and it will dial the Ricochet Service. I tried all connections speeds and they all worked great, the modem autodetects the port speed just fine.

Now the next step.. I went to the Prefs Application and setup my network connections:

Service: Ricochet
Username: blank
Password: -Prompt-
Phone: 3333

In details...
- Automatic DNS setup is checked -
- Automatic IP address is checked -

Now in Modem Preferences are setup:

Modem: Standard
Speed: 57,600
Flow Ctl: ON
String: ATX4&C1&K1
TouchTone Dialing

Every time I press the network connect button it says "dialing Ricochet" then after some time it returns and says "Error: Modem not found (0x1106)".

Does anyone have any tips for how I can see what is going on with the network connection application? Are there any other applications which perform the same connection task with more debugging output? Has anyone else attempted the same thing?

Try lowering the speed to 19,200 or 14,400 and see what happens. Also, try setting Flow Control OFF (the Visor cannot do hardware handshaking because it has no flow control signals on its serial connector).

Tried lowering speed

Yeah I tried both of those tests. Lowering baud rate and also turning off flow control. Still no luck.

It's very odd how typing ATDT3333 in a terminal program will get the modem to dial, yet every attempt at dialing during a dial dialog produces silence. Frustrating.

Try this...

In the Modem Prefs panel select:

Modem: Custom
Country: Other

The "other" setting for "Country:" seems to be the key.

Coutntry OTHER

Country OTHER does seem to be the key. It works now... well sort of.

After setting country to OTHER (go figure!!) in the modem prefs - it does now dial when I do a connect from the network prefs screen. However it now gets all the way to the "signing on" dialog and then returns with a "Error: PPP Timeout" dialog.

I've got my username and password entered correctly. Anyone know how to extend the PPP Timeout, or better yet, how to replace the PPP & TCP/IP stacks with something more configureable and less goofy?

Nope .. still no fix

I tried all combinations of those initialization strings with still no luck on the PPP timeouts.

I really thought that was going to work. It seems like your description of the problem is probably correct since I can get incoming data after a dialed connection on the pc, yet on the palm I get no incoming data after a dialed connection.
