Where can we get NEW batteries?

I was thinking about getting a wireless 802.11b adpater but if my battery is gonna die in a year and i cant get a replacement what is the point? Can ppl start looking around to see if there is a repalcement they can find for the battery? batteries.com under pda/handspring/prism sells AAA batteries for are pda??? Too bad those wont work.

Where'd you get the idea that your battery is going to die in a year?

I've had my Prism for over a year and it's battery is still going strong. No problems whatsoever.

If worse comes to worse, I would try looking on eBay for "dead" Prisms (got dropped, etc). Since the battery is probably still good.

Lithium batterys only last a few years since ive had my prism for over 2 it is comming time. It also depends on your usage.

500-1000 charges, depending on charger/charger patterns (i.e. too many high temp cycles = bad).

According to this source, Li-Ion batteries only last about 2 years (no matter how little you use them):

You probably ought to keep it as full as possible, though because low charge state damages the battery:

You can get USED Prism batteries at GetHighTech.com - who knows how old the battery is. Same risk of death when the battery reaches 2 years old.

PDAConcept.com is setting up to sell NEW Prism batteries.

Just Do It

So what if your battery dies in a year, you will have had a year's worth of 802.11b fun. The xircom module is going for about $100. That's about a quarter a day if you can only use it for one year. Chances are there will be some new technology and some new PDA a year from now anyway. Carpe Diem!

Last night while sitting with the kids on the couch I surfed the web with my Prism, Xircom module, and Free Blazer 2.0 upgrade (See the Free Sprint Digital Link thread for details). I had a blast. Don't miss out on that just because you are worried about battery life.

cause im cheap and poor and a student. Just makes me upset they make devices without replacing the batteries in mind like the ipod.

Gethightech has prism batteries here. I am not sure if they are new or used, however.

can't you just replace them with lithium ion batteries you would purchase at radio chack or something?

I wondered that also. But when I opened my Prism to check, I discovered that the battery is an exact fit inside the case. For example, a similarly sized Nokia Li-ion battery for the 8260 phone (that I got on clearance at Wal-mart for $2.00!) was just a hair too large to fit in the space. Also, the footprint is not an exact rectangle. One of the cells must be offset a little to make room for another part of the unit.

Regarding ordering from Singapore.....when the "Zoids" robot toys became unavailable last Xmas due to demand, my wife ordered one from a firm in Singapore and it arrived a few weeks later, no problems.

I think that given the internet business practices, any scam artists would soon by flamed by everyone and not stay in business very long. So, who wants to be first? <grin>

Ah Hah! So that's why they can only use the custom battery. Thanks Prismer2. Have you considered opening the Nokia battery case and deforming the battery to fit?

Apparently GetHighTech gets most, if not all, of their Prism batteries from dead Prisms. Very likely the batteries they sell are used. Not a good thing if Li-Ion batteries really last only 2 years. What if you paid the $50 and they gave you a 2 year old battery?

I hope PDA Concept can pull it off.

That might be do-able if it was one of those AA or AAA shrink-wrapped battery packs, but the Nokio pack I have is overmolded in hard plastic, so that would not be practical.

It is possible that you COULD "roll your own" if you had a source of AAA Li-ion cells, but I have not checked the dimensions.

I thought I had seen some mention of a higher capacity battery pack being available, about 1400 mah, as compared to the standard battery with about 900 mah. However, I do not know where I saw that. It may have just been a rumor or wishful thinking.

PDAconcept.com talks about upgrading to 1400 mAh. I thought the standard Prism was 1400 mAh.

www.rose-elec.com has a Li-Ion battery pack that is 3.7V, 1400mAh: ROSE-LIP-1S1P. Sounds like a match. I wonder if it has the strange shape, too?

How can one tell indeed if the replacement battery is new?

As far as I know, the Prism battery does not indicate the date of manufacture. This is important since li-ions last only two years from the day they were made. I understand that some of these batteries have a code printed on the body that only the manufacturer understands.

It would be relevant to ask what test can be done to measure the capacity of the li-ion and to somehow determine how much longer it would last.

As for Singapore-based PDA Concept, I made an inquiry some time ago and I was told they could replace the Prism battery for 91 Singapore dollars (US$51 at that time). Presumably this doesn't include freight charges (to and from Singapore).

Given the overall cost, it would be wiser, in my case, to purchase a brandnew Palm or Sony.

New Prism batteries

I just got an email back from a representative from
http://www.getadeal.com/
he told me new batteries for the Prism will be ready in about two weeks from their website. These are new batteries, not used ones as they sell at www.gethightech.com.
