This reply is also being sent using a Handspring modem. I couldn't hold out for the 6-pak, so I broke down and picked one up at the local CompUSA. =) The visor/modem combo is much nicer to hold than the PalmV/modem combo IMHO.

I was one of the first to recieve the modem, and I have yet to replace the batteries in the modem. I have seen no noticeable difference in the battery life for the handheld itself.

I received my modem about a week after they started selling on the handspring website...used it extensively during a couple of my recent business trips surfing the web, emailing, syncing avantgo. I just had to replace the batteries for the first time.

interesting note. i notice that when i ignored the 'low battery' warning, my internet connection became slow and sometimes non-existant (it wouldn't let me send or receive email even though i was still connected (flashing line in upper right corner))

I'm not sure how battery life will suffer with the 6pack. earlier i posted concerns on this topic but unless you're surfing the web for countless hours on your visor, i don't think this may be a problem worth worrying about anymore.

there was that one time i surfed the web for about a half hour and my VISOR battery meter went from ~40% to ~19%.

Hasn't happened again since though.

i've replaced my modem's batteries once... but i do find a weird drain on the visor, whereby i mean when the modem is plugged in and online, the visor's battery meter drops about 15% and usually finds its way back to much closer to it's starting point when the modem is removed.

weird huh?

actually, what i forgot to mention above was the exact same phenomenom! my batter went down to 19% in that instance. I took out the modem module and the next time i used my visor the battery was up at least 10-15%.

it is wierd...but i've also noticed this with avantgo and mapopolis. i guess when the processor is being 'taxed' the battery meter shows this and when you use a less processor hungry app later, the battery levels off to where it should be?

It really looks like the battery level indicator is showing the remaining power in the modem and not the Visor when it is in use - which seems to make sense when you think about it.

I suppose it would be nice to have an LCD screen on the modem to show the modem battery level. I have gotten an alert when it was running down.

Question

Hello,

I'm just wondering why people are not waiting for the "Six-PAC" modem. It is faster and does a lot more for not much more in cost.

I'm going to wait and see. But I can't wait to be able to send e-mail while working on boring projects...

Have a great weekend all...

Most ISP that offer standard username/password and provide PPP will work. AOL does not. Free services such as NetZero, FreeInet will not, due to their proprietary connection schemes. I've used ATT Worldnet and an Internet connection through my company. I've seen numbers for Earthlink. Rules for setting up the service are the same for all other Palm OS devices.

Enjoy.

Carl

All,

FreeWWW works. or did the last time I checked.

MSN, what I use, works.

They tell me CompuServe Classic works, but I never got it to work.

Evan,

Couldn't wait, needed to modem now. May still get the six pac and sell the modem to some one else.

But if Innogear takes much longer, Wireless modems might be available/announced, then I will get one of these.

Felipe

Echoing Riotmaker's query...

What programs are people using to surf via Visor w/modem?

TIA

So how looong does it take to get a internet response? Like if you used Proxiweb to go to www.mywebmd.com and searched for "Ear infections in children". How long does it take to bring up a list of related articles? How long to bring up an actual article?
Thanks!

I use Proxiweb as a browser, though honestly, who wants to do that connected to a 33.3k hardline?

I works, and it's cool, but doesn't have any real value.

As for e-mail, I purchased MultiMail PRO. I works great, so far. No complaints. I like being able to configure a seemingly unlimited about of dialups and eight e-mail servers.

I use Proxiweb and AvantGo for Internet access. TG postman for mail. I connect using FreeWWWeb. (works on any Dial-up ISP though) Make sure settings are right under pref, ro you'll spend forever wondering why it doesnt work.
