This sounds like the same problem I was having with that corrupted 16-bit icon for ISilo. I would not be surprised if this was the same problem with another program's icon. My test for this was to move ISilo into "Unfiled" and restart SilverScreen where my default category that starts is "Main". Problem fixed. I could tell the corruption started down the screen because I could see some icons ok at the top, but when I scrolled down, it corrupted the most of the screen. I experimented moving icons out of the suspected row until I figured it was ISilo's icon.

One wish: that there was a theme with smaller icons. They are certainly eye-catching but i wish they didn't take up so much real estate.

Other than that VERY NICE LOOKING!

I get Fatal resets too, mostly by just trying to scroll the screen...

I guess it's not ready for prime time just yet...

It could be the iSilo icon.. I'll need to test,,

Cool. I thought it was a specific program also, so I tried deleting it, but still had other problems.

Which programs should we be keeping in the "unfiled" section?

"FunADay" was killing mine...

Well, ISilo is the only one that I have had problems with on mine. All the other programs that I have(and there's quite a few) are just fine.

By the way, you don't have to keep them in "Unfiled" if they are corrupted. Once I figured out that ISilo was the problem, I changed the icon associated with it to one of the ones in the theme that I use(BeBop). You can do this by dragging the bad icon in question to the toolbar Info button. Then once the info screen opens, you tap the icon in the top left corner. That pulls up another window where you can select a new icon by dragging a new icon up to the left corner and dropping it on the old one. Now, the fun part is the fact that you really can't see the screen since it's being corrupted because of the old icon, so you have to go on memory of where everything is on the screen to make it happen. In the end though, it worked for me and I have ISilo back in my "Main" folder with its' new, working icon.

If there's anybody else that's found a bad icon like myself and purplemd, then please post so we will all be aware of it.

Mattp - The springboard icons are thrown into the unfiled category even after you categorize them. This is a problem, but you now know where your program files go.

Unhappy Not so fast...

I have been a loyal fan of SilverScreen since day one... and I have waited anxiously for the new release for my Prism, but I have to say.... I am a little disappointed. In the several months that I have had my Prism, I switched to MegaLauncher for color support until the new SilverScreen came out, but after trying SilverScreen last night, I switched back to Megalauncher.

There were a couple of things that bothered me. First of all, it totally crashed my Prism upon startup... I had to go in and clean everything up, install the old version of SilverScreen and then install 1.9 over top of that. Once I got it working, I found that is was very slow! The menu bar at the bottom moves slow, dragging applications to the various spots is painfully slow, and moving in and out of apps was also slow. I got the "please wait" message several times as I moved in and out of apps, as if SilverScreen was managing settings or something. I never got that before. Maybe its just my unit, but I found myself getting very impatient. I was also annoyed by the black screen flash that you get everytime you enter or leave an application. As you leave or enter the SilverScreen desktop you get this flash of black, I didn't like that. SilverScreen is also fairly memory intensive compared to Megalauncher, and without some color icon sets out, I was having a hard time rationalizing its use.

I am disappointed because I am not a huge Megalauncher fan either, its to Mac/PC looking for me. SilverScreen is still the most versatile and asthetically pleasing launcher out there in my opinion, but, in this case, function outweighed form, for me! If they can improve the speed issue and bring in some cool color icon sets (which I am sure they will do)... I am back in a flash. Just my $.02.

HandeKeeper,

I can appreciate your problems. My Prism crashed the first time that I start ChromaCast too. I reloaded SilverScreen 1.9.5 and all the ChromaCast stuff again and since then, no problems.

I also feel your pain on the black screen thing. I think it's switching screen modes when you enter/leave SilverScreen which is why you get that flash of black. Like maybe it's running in 16-bit mode, but you run an app, it drops back down to 8-bit or something. It doesn't bother me that much though.

As for the slowdowns, well, I can't say that I have that problem. No, "Please Wait" or anything. It seems to be as snappy as the previous versions of SilverScreen. I've always thought that it could be a little snappier, but overall the speed is quite good for me. Do you have specific apps that do the "Please Wait" thing? If I have the app, I will test it on mine.

Exclamation

I get nothing but fatal exceptions on my Prism.
They should have labeled this as a beta.

I use afterburner so I don't see a speed problem. As I recall, it was kinda slow on my Deluxe anyway.

since the icons can be problematic, I switched to "list" mode and assigned things to categories. I am in the process of changing all B/W icons to SilverScreen icons (downloaded everysingle theme and icon set to make sure I had enough variety).

Hopefully that will work until we get some cool color icons or someone can figure out how to use RscEdit or something to colorize some of the greyscale icons.

waynorth,

Thanks for your reply. But my icons are no where to be found. They are not in my unfiled category and they don't show up in the all category. I did go into my unfiled category in list view and clicked the + icon next to the Name and the "please wait" dialog came up and it showed me all of the databases that were on my module, but none of the applications. So it sees the module but won't show me any applications.

I have JackBack installed on my Prism and have it back up to my module every night, I wonder if this has anything to do with it. Anyone else use JackBack with the springboard and chromacast with no problems?

Matt

My experiences are not quite as bad as yours, but I do find that SilverScreen/ChromaCast *is* somewhat slower than the built-in launcher. The strange thing for me is that while it's always slow when I first start up Silver Screen, it's not always slow after that. Sometimes, particularly when exiting applications, there is a delay, but other times it's just as fast as the standard launcher. I also get the screen flash, but for me it's more of a white flash.

I know how, I have been colorizing my icons for over a month.

Go into RsrcEdit, open the app you want a color icon on, scroll through it's resources until you find 'tAIB 1000', open it, copy the icon that is there (menu -> copy) and then make a new 8-bit icon (menu -> 8-bit), paste the B/W icon in the new 8-bit icon blank (so you have a template), and then colorize to taste. Some apps don't like being colorized, one of which i[s] SmartDOC.

Thumbs up Response from Sensei

This is from support at PocketSensei:
My guess is that you have some more icons that don't want to display. There are a number of programs that predate the 16 bit prism and don't have legal 16 bit icons. (the earlier Astraware software had these problems and there are a few others)

The default Prism operates with an 8 bit launcher and this is why the problem is not normally visible. We are considering adding a preference to operate in 8 bit or 16 bit color to prevent this kind of problem. Right now SilverScreen always operates in the best mode it can find. (i.e. 16 bit on the Prism) Sorry.

Best regards,
Support

hmm... why not just have it check if the 16bit icon isnt there, and if so, modify the 8 bit icon and use that instead?

iSilo was my problem..

I deleted it from the palm OS launcher,
went back into Silverscreen switched to the "list icon" view
reinstalled isilo, then dragged the tiny icon to the big "I" in silverscreen, from there I changed the iSilo icon.. All is well now..

Copy of an email I sent, and response received about catgories and the 8mb springboard module with Silver Screen.

From: "John King"
Date: Fri, 23 Mar 2001 07:33:43 -0500
To: <[email protected]>
Subject: Silver Screen and Handspring 8mb Module

AAAARGH, how do I keep programs categorized that are on a Handspring 8mb
memory module. This program with Chromacast is a winner on my Visor Prism,
but the problem mentioned above will keep me from purchasing. Can this be
fixed. Find out how Launch'Em does it.

Dear John,

We are working on this issue. The standard Palm launcher ( and Launch'em as well) keeps all the module information around forever even after modules are removed. This takes up a small amount of memory with b/w white icons, but takes up much more with color icons. We are trying to find a way that is reasonable.

Best regards,
Support
