I used a variety of coupons to get my VDX for $200, back when the retail price was $250. I work near the water and must face the reality that at some point my PDA could, conceivably, be into the drink.

While I am envious of the features and speed of the Prism, Platinum and new Edge it is unlikely that I will ever be able to balance the risk of immersion with the $400-$500 cost of the latest PDA product.

My sincere hope is that technology and performance will always trickle down to the Sub-$200 level, and that Handspring and Palm, et al don't begin to tailor their products in this price range for the "kiddie" market.

There are thousands of us out there, far removed from the cozy confines of a cubicle vestibule, who are putting technology to good use via our Palm OS devices. I'd hate to see that three or four years from now 90% of the R&D orientation vested in machines like the iPAC, which cost over $500 and will not soon find a comfortable place in my risk budget.

Instead of prices going higher, they need to go lower. There should be a Visor Deluxe model for $149, and the Solo model should be $99, then EVERYONE could buy one! I do won a Prism, but I only paid $300 for it on eBay.

I've made a personal decision not to spend over the $250 I spent on the deluxe for any new pda. Given the current state of things I would be able to upgrade to a.....visor deluxe! It's been over a year (a year filled with major advances for the Palm platform) and Handspring is still selling the deluxe with the same features at the same price. I thought electronics were supposed to get cheaper as they aged. Someone want to buy a 33MHz computer with 20MB RAM and a 300MB hard drive for $1500? An extra $500 will get you a VGA monitor capable of displaying 256 colors and a HP Deskjet 500 (b&w). Granted there are a lot of big differences between a desktop computer and a pda, but the principle remains the same you can't sell top of the line technology of a year ago at top dollar today.

Keefer:

Why not invest in a waterproof case?

Waterproof Case

I could buy a waterproof case, or I could sell the boatyard, load up the family wagon and drive west with a pair of oars strapped to the roof and not stop until the first person asks "what are those funny looking wooden things strapped onto your roof?".
