reconnect, you didn't leave it in a very cold place did you? if you did then it is possible to "crack" the screan without dropping it due to the screens temp changing rapidly, shouldn't happen but its possible.

can't wait till handspring comes out with there next model, thats when I am getting one for myself (well after they work out a few buggs...)

Unhappy

I BABY my VDX ice and have managed to avoid many of the bad things described elsewhere on this discussion board. However, I recently noticed a crack in the case just to left of the microphone port. There have been no vertical redisplacement events and I always have it in one kind of case or another. Hardly worth complaining about, but it struck me as a bit unwarrannted. The important stuff still cranks and I'd give my unit high marks on reliability. Suppose there's any chance of buying case replacements?

Wow, bjornsen, that is the exact same place where my visor case has cracked as well. I just assumed it was an unusual situation, but maybe not . . . . Anyone else out there with a similar problem?

By the way, r4bid, I don't recall leaving my visor "on ice" so to speak, but I guess it is a possibility.

If Visors are like cats, I've already used 3 of my Vdx's lives.....

Twice, I've dropped my Vdx. Both times, it was in the HS beltclip case. Once from a height of 3 feet, once from approx 6 feet! Not a scratch or crack anywhere! I thought for sure I'd have a cracked screen.

But the most amazing of my tales..... at work, while loading furniture into a customer's Suburban, I took my Vdx (again, in the beltclip case) and placed it on their back bumper, because it was in my way. Ten minutes after the Suburban left, I realized I had left the Visor on the bumper! I frantically searched the parking lot, expecting it to fall off somewhere nearby. But no Visor, not even a smashed one. After more searching of nearby streets by bike, I called the customer at home and left a message, asking them to check their bumper for my Visor (however unlikely that would be).

But without her getting my message, she showed up 5 minutes later, holding my Visor. She informed me that she had driven about 8-10 miles, running errands to Walmart, etc, and found the Visor on her bumper!!! How that thing managed to stay on her bumper while traveling 50mph to and from Walmart, I'll never know.

6 lives to go, and the night is young

I have one visor that gets heavily used every day 7 days a week. It is in my wallet so it goes everywhere with me and has even survived being left in the car at -45F in the winter (ouch! ooops!) overnight one time. (I got home, I was tired...) This machine I have had since late December of 1999.

The other machine gets much less use and we've only had it a month.

Both machines get used by kids (ages 3, 7 and 8) to play games with or take notes with (8 year old - in fact he is just about to buy his own he likes it so much :-) ).

Both machines are still in excellent condition despite the cold night out and the occasional dropping.

I do recommend some sort of protective sheet to protect the screen from scratchs. You can make your own for almost nothing.

In terms of reliability, don't let the batteries get too low and be careful of what software you run on the machine. If you find something that is crashing the machine. Stop using it! Backup, backup, backup and never try new software without first backing up. Standard Operating Procedures.

Cool

The only problem that I've had with my VDX worth noting is the plastic cover that comes with it (the detachable one that attaches to the back of the unit). The original plastic cover developed a crack right near the notch at the top, and eventually the whole notch came off. Handspring replaced this free of charge. When I e-mail them to ask for a replacement, they said that the covers were back-ordered, so it might take awhile (actually took 3 weeks).

I guess I am not the only one to have this problem? Other than that, everything is fine! Hopefully Handspring will incorporate a different type of cover in future units,... *hint hint*

Angry

I just bought a brand new VDx from Handspring's store. I kept it in it's hard plastic cover, and in it's leather padded slipcover. I leave it in the front pocket of my pants. It has not been dropped, sat on, etc., yet when I went to inspect it yesterday night, I discovered a long crack running right down the screen. I don't know how--I don't know why, I just know that I want a new Visor NOW! HS is being slow with their e-mail, so I'm thinking of just getting on the phone and calling them. I'll keep you posted.
