In reading all the threads about memory, from the small flash units to the larger cf-adapters, to the guy who makes a Visor motherboard with 16megs built in, one thing is clear: no one is satisfied with the current memory situation!

We have e-books. Phones. AvantGo. Photo albums. videos to play. We're dying here.

It's like the early days of computing when people got 40 meg hard drives and then ran around trying to find solutions, like offloading to floppies or buying Quantum hard cards.

My guess is that handspring/palm will come out with larger memory capacity soon. They have to...don't they?

Technically no... I'd bet they keep to the same product specs Palm does for compatibility reasons..

I have to agree. There's a point where you have so many modules and plug-ins that you're better off making sure that your laptop has a good battery.

Yeah, I remember when 8 mb seemed like an infinite amount of memory. I went from a Palm Pro to a Visor Deluxe. Now I'm using approximately all 8 mb. The only way I can make do is by using my InnoPak 2v to give me the extra 2 mb.

I have to agree with the first post. There needs to be more base memory standard. I just got my base memory increased to 16 meg on my Prism, and got the 16 meg module as well. The applications are WAY outpacing the native memory. Put a couple of TealMovies on your Prism, throw in some EyeModule2 videos and Poof!- You're maxed out. I use eyecontact for my database and like to keep a 5 second video of my dog on hand. I am already pushing the limits of my 32 megs (16+16). Soon I will need the compact flash module to keep up with all the application inovation. In many senses this is a good problem to have as it speaks to the incredible success of the Palm platform. However, the trend is clear: more memory will be an every increasing requirement.

Yeah, I think the 1st SB everyone should buy (it should be bundled w/all Visors, in fact) is one of the CF adapters. Then you can off-load stuff like TealMovies, etc., and it doesn't hurt you as much.

But the new ver. of WordSmith, for ex., just went up to like 450k from 350k, so there's def. a new trend toward some bloat ...
... but it sure would be handy if the next Visor (color Edge, w/320x320 res?) was 16Mb.

Yeah, but you also have to remember that there is a whole group of people that just use their Palms as an organizer only. They don't treat their system as a laptop or even as a "real computer" (which we know it is).

I would bet that the market research that Plam and Handspring has shows that this is where the market currently stands.

A number of us at VisorCentral would not agree that it is where we would like it to be, but maybe we push the envelope for the "higher-end" uses.

16mb or 160mb wouldn't matter. Memory is like a closet. The contents expand to overflowing.

Since HS is not making the 16 MB units right now, I ran into the same problem with my DLx and Prism. I bought the 8MB Flash Module. It works great for now. I put in most of the apps there and data files on the Prism/Dlx. In my case that's the best since that way, I don't have to install the apps on both machines. I am waiting for the 16MB flash module. Oh... Apps can run from the Flash Module... But the data can not be written so, don't try to write a data file to a flash module. You will need a hard reset when you crash. It's worth the 80 USD. As for CF cards, I heard that you can not run apps from there -- the current ones that are out anyways. Can someone look into that?

One thing about using the expansion modules (8 MB from Handspring; 8 & 16 MB from Hagiwara) is that SOME apps can be run from the modules. An example is PeanutReader, which allows you to read "huge" books off the module, and I have had no problem adding notes/bookmarks (which are stored in main memory, along with the main app as the "driver").

Some apps, like Album to Go, warn you not to remove the module while you are using them. Others crash and burn when you tap their icons, probably because of the way they access data.

So which apps are "safe" for full access and use? Which work completely off a module, whereas some need the app in main memory, but can access related files off an expansion module (e.g. the examples above)? I would be interested in seeing a list of those that people have tried and found to be relatively trouble-free.

One last thing: Because of some data appears to be "bridging" between main memory and the expansion module, whenever I remove the module (16 MB) to insert my Minijam module, I get an automatic reset. (yes, I always go back to the main launcher first) Anyone seen this?
