Unhappy

I'm a proud owner of a brand new Edge that won't charge in the USB cradle. I've followed the instructions as per the Setup Guide and the darn thing will not charge at all.

Question: Does the cradle have to be plugged into a USB port in order for the cradle to charge? Going by the info in the Setup Guide, I don't think so but I could be wrong. (Am waiting for a USB Cardbus card to arrive so I can't plug the cradle into anything yet).

Any insight?

The electrical power to charge your visor in its cradle does comes from the usb port.
People who have to use serial ports have power adapters for their cradles.

Handspring will have travel chargers available in may for charging their VE away from their computers.

If you dont have your own usb port yet then I would suggest that you find one by a friend or somewhere, plug in your cradle and charge your edge. It should only take a few minutes and you wont have to instal the software on that computer. (if I am right anyway)

Lightbulb USB Not needes

You do not need to plug in the USB adapter to charge your edge. I charged mine the first time, and lots of times at work when my laptop is not pluged in with the cradle.

Red face Edge must have been DOA

Well I just got back from Future Shop after exchanging my first Edge and have just plugged in the new one. So far so good; the little dickens is charging in the cradle (to my relief). I guess this settles the question as to whether the cradle needs to be connected to a USB port in order to charge the Edge. Answer: it does not.

I don't know whether it was the unit itself, the cradle, or the charger, that was defective. The guys at Future Shop said this was the first Edge they've had returned (take that with a grain of salt).

What will Handsrping do with the return? I have the serial number of the suspect unit if anyone wants it.
