I always tell the people I work with getting PDAs that there are three big things to remember:
You WILL drop it, so use a good case or protect it 7/24 (odds are you will drop it when not protected, so try to use a case that is always on.)
You WILL scratch the screen, so use a good screen protector.
You WILL loose the data- dead batteries, hard reset, software problems, etc.
I always recommend two independent back-ups- ideally on a PC and on-board, or on two different computers. I have had problems with loosing the data and then having a bad conduit so I could not use one back-up restore process, and one especially bad crash screwed up my on-board memory AND PC memory. Thank God I had a 80% back-up at Yahoo's site!
If batteries are an on-going issue, you might consider the internal charging system at Stephanie's Visor Pages (http://www.felesmagus.com/visor/index.html) OR going to Metal Halid (NiMH) rechargeables.
I used NiMH- two pair. Kept one in the unit and one in the charger and swapped them every day or two when the charge dropped to about 3/4 full.
For back-ups, I really like Backup Buddy from Blue Nomad- it will back up to my Clie's Memory Stick AND to the desktop, but there are a lot of good back-up programs. You can even use HandMark's SuperUtility as a general file manager AND back-up.
