Post What's happening with the Edge?

All,

Is the Edge going to continue and form the base for a new color, 16MB+ machine or will it be dicontinued and should I get rid of mine? The LONG wait for the yet-to-be released Stowaway leads me to believe Handspring could be telling third party accessorizers one thing and the consumers another.

The to-be-released tomorrow HP Jornada 56X has a Stowaway that works with it already and it was announced a month ago. The Edge has been around for months and it still waiting. The new snap-on keyboard shown on the Handspring and Visorcentral pages notes "no Edge support." If Handspring is committed to the Edge, why are the peripheral suppliers not on board?

What's your take?

Hasta,

Bill

The real question is whether or not the new Jornada has a new connector. If it has the same connector as the older Jornada's, it's not really surprising that they'd have a keyboard for it (similar to what happened with the Sony Clies).

It all comes down to business. If the edge is only 1% of the PDA market and your a third party business and you have to use your resourses and supplies to make a seperate product for the edge that is only 1% of the PDA market? now would you do it? If i would do it i would charge more for it!
i have been emailing gotype and targus and gotype/landware says the have no intention to make one for the edge, but they will email me if they do. stowaway is giving me the run around and different dates for its release. i dont think they are even thinking about making one!

Well, I'm terminally frustrated with product support by third parties for the Edge, so I'm bailing out. I've ordered a new HP Jornada 568 PocketPC and selling two Edges (one was lost and found but I bought another in the meantime), lightly used, in their original packaging with a Thinmodem Plus, a travel charger, and a travel sync cable.

If anyone has interest, let me know soon before I lsit them on eBay. I'd like to get $200.00 each for the Edges, $70.00 for the modem and use the travel stuff as negotiating stock.

Hasta,

Bill

It doesn't surprise me that people are starting to bail out of the Edge. HandSpring needs to do something quickly. Instead of taking action, HandSpring is sitting on their hands.

Well I'm considering selling mine as well but I haven't decided. I love my Edge but the lack of third party support and all of these colored PDA's just keeps on pusing me to sell it. But I'm holding on for the moment.

This is what handspring emailed me back

"Thank you for contacting Handspring.

We appreciate your continued support of the Edge. It appears that
third
party suppliers of modules and accessories are slow to invest in
whatever
technology is necessary to make products compatible with the Edge's
slim
design and unique Springboard slot. We regret any inconvenience this
may
have caused you"

thats exactly what they wrote me!

long story short. They need a colord Edge. Increase the market share and most imortantly they need a new expansion technology for the Edge the Springboard model is completly wrong for the Edge. I personaly beleve that the Edge is none expandable. But I ignored that I needed to expand it when i bought it. Adding a bulk at the top back half is not the way!

The ironic thing about poor Bills statement here is that the Edge is drastically more expandable than the HP jornanda. There are some neat CF cards out there that work with the Jornada, but I don't think that the Pocket PC line has expansion potential of the Visor series. I agree that the Keyboard needs to be released, but most other devices work fine.

We will miss you, Bill... Stay close to your Charging Cradle with your Jornada...Your going to need it

Doug,

I'm pretty pleased with the Jornada 568 so far. I agree the battery life may be lacking when compared to the Edge but, in view of the fact that I've replaced my Edge and my Toshiba 490cdt with one small machine, I'm pretty happy.

Had the Visorr folks brought out a color 16MB Edge and encouraged either Halfkeyboard or Stowaway to leap into the breach, I'd have stayed with the Palm OS (More software and , with the Visor line, more expansion)rather than continue with a Windoze machine.

I'm an old HP 200LX user and am still hunting for the next-big-thing to match the capabilities of that machine. It's BIG drawback was battery life if you really wanted to used it for communication.

Hasta,

Bill
