I found that Target stores have the VDX on sale for $199 until the end of March. Combine that with a $50 rebate from Handspring and the VDX is now $149. My question is.."Is the VDX worth $149 when all these other models are now being released?" I would anticipate light to medium use of the unit, but it would be used daily. I would use it to keep checkbook entries, golf scores, and some light spreadsheet/word processor use.

What is the opinion of this esteemed board? Is the VDX worth $149 or should I pay twice as much for a Platinum? Personally, I don't see the Platinum being worth twice the money, but your opinion is appreciated.

Another option would be to pay $159 for a Palm IIIxe with flash ROM. I know, I know. I should wash my mouth out with soap for saying this, but I am open to all options. However, I am cost conscious, and the color units seem to be harder to read that the grayscale - to me.

So whadaya think, VisorCentral?

not using modules? go for the IIIxe. you can upgrade the OS (and gain the advantages there) and then connect to a cell phone for some wireless usage or IR syncing. it has the 8MB so you'll be fine for the uses you listed.

If you plan on using a springboard...then the answer is obvious.

I think the offer for the $199 price for the Vdx already includes the $50 rebate from Handspring. Check the fine print. Too bad, for $149 I think the Vdx is a great deal for most users. It sure beats the M105 at $199.

joelforman, I checked at Target and you are right. The $199 is the after rebate price. Darn misleading advertising. Too bad. I wanted to go for a VDX, but I don't think I can justify a $40 price difference between the VDX and IIIxe.

Can anyone help me justify the price difference, plus the wait time for a $50 rebate? I sure would like to have the grayscale update in the OS v3.5. That isn't available for the VDX, correct?

nope the VDx only handles greyscale if the software writes directly to the hardware (or something like that).

I'm sticking to my earlier post. if you don't plan on using springboards, the IIIxe is the way to go. You'll be able to upgrade the OS for added features later and (what i think is the best feature) the ability to IRsync and connect to a cell phone (i know, there are ways of doing this with the VDx, but not as simple as Palm's 'out of the box' solution).

I wish i could get my VDx to at least OS3.5.

VDx from Target stores is indeed $149!!!

I checked at my local Target last night, and they have indeed taken a temporary price cut on the VDx. They are selling the VDx for $199. When you combine that with the $50 rebate from Handspring the VDx is only $149!!! I have been around this board for a while now, but have not bought a Visor. I think that this is the deal that will finally make me join your ranks. A $150 VDx seems too good a deal to pass up.

That's half the price of the Platinum! However, I'm still interested in VisorCentral's opinion. Do you think that there is a better deal than a $150 VDx out there? Is the VDx still a viable machine? Or is it outdated, and do you believe that Handspring will drop it from the line? Let me know.

BTW: Target offers a 90 day return policy on the VDx!

Back to the original question, it really all depends on what you're planning to do.

I've been doing a lot of downloading to my Visor (e.g., AvantGo pages, books, software), so I appreciate the USB syncing that the IIIxe doesn't have. I haven't bought any Springboard modules yet, but it's a nice option to have especially with the new inexpensive CF/SmartMedia adapters and modules.

On the other hand the IIIxe has the flash ROM and OS3.5, if those are important to you. I don't know much else about it. :P

I got mine for $150 and I do 5times the stuff you plan on doin.. it's mega worth it.
I'd pay full price now that I know what it can do.

A Vdx is way worth it. IT is much better than a IIxe, and is actualyl sTILL BEING SUPPORTED AND SOLD!

Iguess it's hard for me to give you EXACT reasons.. there are so many out there, but let me say. USB, Springboard, Handspring

Hi all, I'm new Visor owner :-) since 2-23.
What I'm wondering about this Target thing is, I got mine 2-32 then a week later it goes down $50...I gotta find out if they have a price guarentee where i can get $50 back...

and it FIGURES that it goes down right after i get one! hehe
