I've got a cable modem with a USB ethernet adapter using one of my USB ports, with the Visor cradle in the other.

While syncing, my machine with lock EVERY time I try to sync, unless I unplug the cable modem. Then it works fine. Why did I unplug the modem/ethernet adapter? One of the 'troubleshooting' fixes at the Handspring site said something to the effect that 'if you're having trouble, unplug all other USB devices'. Well, wonderful...

Any hints?

Ouch...

I have a USB scanner, joystick, hub, compact flash reader, and my visor cradle plugged into my system with no problem...

What version of Windows are you running? Try just swapping the order in which you're using the two ports...

I'm using Win98 4.10.1998

Tonight I did my second sync with the cable modem unplugged, and both times now (the times that worked) Windows gave me the 'new hardware detected' message before the sync. Is this simply because I switched what USB port it was connected to? That seemed strange...

I also have Win98 (not the SE one), and sync OK with USB printer, USB scanner, and Visor cradle all plugged into a hub and running to one port on the computer.

It's this damn Aptiva then. I've heard rumblings about IBM (which are what, Acer motherboards?) and USB...but I've yet to have multiple USB devices...until now.

Looks like a call to tech support...

Thanks everyone. Still love my Visor.

I am having the same problem. My system also locks up while trying to access my email through the cable modem.
Unplugging works for me also.

All the USB devices share a 12M bandwidth, that's why I don't like USB anymore, I had alot of trouble with using 2 or more USB devices at the SAME time.
So forget about those USB modems, ethernet cards, CDROMs, which you have to use all the time.

FWIW - my system has two available USB ports. One port is configured for a single USB peripheral. The other is configured for a USB hub. According to the guy who built the system, this port can only accomodate a hub. It will not "handle" a single USB item. In my case, my SuperDisk is using the single/one-USB item port. I have a 4-port hub plugged into the hub-configured port. I have a printer and my Visor cradle plugged into the hub. I think you can check your particular configuration in Device Manager, or, you might check the USB ports on the back of your computer. Mine shows a "hub" icon for the "hub" USB port. The single port has no icon designation. And, everything works great. No problems sync-ing.
