Thanks for all your help.

The Handspring techsupport here in Asia is the dogs! They won't service visors not bought directly from them. I bought mine from Philly and brought it home. This stinks.

Meanwhile, the techsupport from the US is not helpful either. On their emails, they're basically giving me a list of things to do, and if that doesn't work, they told me I should "consider returning [my] Visor" and then there's a url for the Asia techsupport.

Which won't take my unit.

And here I am now.

More suggestions needed.

For now, I cannot beam.

My Visor Prism IR died 20 minutes after IR beaming with my old vdx. I did a hard reset and no success. Rinse/lather/repeat 3 more times. I took the """" thing back and got a new prism. No trouble. I hotsync by IR with my laptop, exchange programs with people at work, etc.

Beaming resolved

Final Result. I got a chance to test out the beaming capability of my new (if you ain't had it before, it's new to you)VDX. My friend's Palm V was about 2 - 2 1/2 feet away, across a table at a restaurant.

I beamed him 3 programs ranging in size to about 60K, no problems. None at all!!

Beamus Interuptus

I'm having the beam interupted error when I try and send a program to someone. I don't have beam box, had beamware but got rid of it and still have the problem. Had it on my old visor and now have it on my new. I'm not using any hacks and the only major program I'm running is Datebook 4.

Any suggestions or is it just coincidence that my new unit has the same problem?

I'll be switching to a platinum this week and may need to do a program by program install to check software instead of using backup buddy.

BEAM advice

Those of you having trouble beaming, consider this:

Beaming requires a sequence of infra red light flashes to be sent reliably between two devices. Although we can't see it, IR light behaves much like regular light. It refracts, it reflects, it gets absorbed, etc..

I've got a glass topped coffee table. Beaming doesn't work reliably when atop that table. The glass apparently catches the IR signal, refracts it, and ends up confusing the Visors. If I put a magazine or something opaque under the visors, they beam flawlessly. I also have beaming problems when on a solid white surface.

You can overwhelm the IR reciever if you are too close. If beaming doesn't work well at 3-4 inches, then move to 8-10 inches. If it still isn't perfect, move to 16-20 inches apart. The IR beam disperses more with distance, so there is actually a BETTER chance the receiving visor will see your beam if it's a little farther away.

Conclusion? Your beaming success may depend on what your Visor is sitting on. Your success may vary with DISTANCE. Try something different, see if it improves.

IR Beaming issues

I had the same problem with my replacement IDX in that it would'nt sync. My original visor had a problem with "scrolling" on the display, and I called HS CS and they replaced it with no hassles. I had beamed many things with that visor, but hadn't had to do it in a while.

My new visor shows up, screen works fine. I forget about IR beaming. A friend gets a Palm VII, and wants a couple of the games I had. Boom - beam interupted. Huh? Try at all distances and angles. No dice. Call HS Tech and he has me try all of the things - remove hacks, reset, check to make sure there isn't anything in the way. I end up using a CCD camera to verify that I'm getting IR, and he says that its probably a hardware problem. I talk to CS and they send me a new(refurbished) deluxe that is optimized for the Minstrel S.

All in all, I was happy at the end, although I can't understand how so many people are having this issue. Especially the ones who had it work before? I never had any problems with Palm beaming, they seem to be quite reliable at distances my Visor isn't. Any ideas as to why?

Indeed, why are so many people having trouble with the beaming? Is it any one or the combination of:

1. the unfavorable/bad beaming environment?
2. the dinkiness of the Visor when it comes to IR beaming?
3. the instability of the technology itself? (doubt it)

Hey, anyone from Handspring out there who might want to answer this?
