Red face

Kinda a strange circumstance, that caught me by surprise:

Before shipping my PC off for a different use last month, I backed it up to a CD-R. Since then, I foolishly thought my Visor would be fine over the weekend at 22% battery life. Well, an alarm must've gone off and all is now lost.

Not a big deal I thought, since I haven't entered too much since last month, so I installed the Handspring software on a different PC and copied my profile under the appropriate directory.

I get error messages when trying to launch the palm desktop! I am able to successfully import my old records in, but cannot seem to get my 'hidden' memo document which is *very* important to me.

Any hints? (Besides buying the backup module! Is there anyway to trick it so that I don't have to import everything?!?

TIA,

../mk - will order backup module very, very shortly!

Check the backup files 'Read-Only' property.
It's very possible that the file is set to read-only since you backed it up to a CD-R.
The exact same thing happened to me last week after I reinstalled Win98 and tried restoring my Palm files from a CD-R.

Talking

Thanks Bregent, I had not thought of that.

The issue is now resolved, though it wasn't as pretty as I thought it would be. I spoke with Handspring Technical Support and the following was done to get my data back:

removal of Handspring software

deletion of Palm directory

reinstall of Handspring software

clear users on Visor (inverted shortcut stroke followed by two periods and a '5'!)

copy old profile from CD backup

perform synch

This got all applications reinstalled on the Visor. I soon discovered that none of my phone numbers, dates or memos were restored, so the following was done:

import phone book from CD (some categories were not carried over)

import date book from CD (all dates were off by one day - had to change manually)

had to use text editor on PC to open (supposedly) private file and cut/paste into new memos.

It was all a bit of a pain, but I'm just happy that I didn't lose any data.

I was also sad to learn that the 'private' things aren't that secure, espcially since I use W98 for synching.

Thanks for the suggestion.
