US SMS: Maturing & bearing Fruit

Looks like Cingulair, AT&T, and Voicestream, at least, are offering full SMS interoperability.

I tried sending an SMS to my mom (on verizon--I'm on Voicestream) the other day. it may have worked--she got it, but couldn't read anything but the phone number (i.e. she got it, it worked, she doesn't know how to use her phone or all she got was my return number)

I didn't realize how much I would love SMS. I had thought it was kinda foo foo (*no relation*), but now I'm doing all I can to get people to communicate with me via text when it will suffice. I much prefer a SMS I can read in class to a voicemail alert I have to use minutes to check and have to have the time and privacy to do so.

and on the other side, it's just as fun/useful. it's nice to know you can get a message across despite being unable to actually speak to a person. Email is good for that, but SMS gives you the satisfaction of getting the message to the person instead of the account.

...anyway, just wondering what other folks in the US think of SMS & whether or not it will finally take hold here.

Well, voicestream sends to email address just fine. There is an "SMS message center number" which routes all SMS messages for VoiceStream except for those routed by the "SMS email center number" which routes SMS messages heading out to email.

I tried it and I can send sms msgs between voicestream to at&t without a problem.

It's about time the US networks pulled out their finger on SMS; I have a mate in New York on VoiceStream, and for ages I've only been able to reliably send him SMS when he's roaming on a foreign network.

This week, I've noticed, after reading that the US networks were getting their act together, that I can send him messages while he's at home.

It's a great tool - if I'm in a meeting, I can ask someone elsewhere to confirm something for me. I can tell people I'm running late for a meeting, or send a quick note to someone at night saying "Are you up" rather than calling them and waking them up. It's also great when you're at a busy event, like an outdoor festival or a show, where the local cell may be overwhelmed and a voice channel not available. Compose an SMS and it usually gets through first time; if not, just hit Send again until it does.

There are also 'reverse billed' SMS services now, where you can request information which arrives via SMS - perhaps the password for a protected web site - and the charge is added to your mobile bill.

I gave it a shot and was able to SMS my buddy in Sweden. It arrived to him within seconds. He was also able to SMS me back.

Sweet!

Too bad I can't SMS my friends US Cellular phone a block from here.

SMS is great here over in the UK. There are many situations where it is just not convenient to talk to someone and an SMS message is perfect. It's like an instant messenger ie ICQ except they are always on. There are times when i would much rather send an SMS than call the person.

In my opinion SMS is great!

Found it..!

Orange, the UK's most popular network (there are 3 other operators, plus 2 virtual ones) reported on the number of SMSs sent at New Year.

The figure doubled over the previous year. Between midnight on New Year's Eve and 3am the following morning, Orange users sent 28 million text messages.

It's estimated that across all the UK networks, the figure was something like 90 million, which is around 1.5 for every person in the country.

Who said it would never catch on...?

I use Voicestream, and just tried sending an SMS to AT&T. It worked. Like dietrichbohn, my mom uses Verizon and I tested it there. I'm still waiting for her response. I hope it works.

SMS WILL catch on if the there is compatibility between the different providers. Every (almost) good new phone for sale seems to tout its 2-way messaging capability. That wasn't the case a couple of years ago.

Also, with everyone using SMS, my Treo is much more useful because of the easy text entry.

is anyone aware of a website somewhere that explains SMS (not really technically, but a how-to/tutorial kind of thing?)

I guess, not having used it - though my Digital Link has the capablity, I don't really get what it is/does or what the advantage over email is...

if you don't know of a tutorial kind of site, maybe someone would SMS me and walk me through how it works and then I might get a better idea.

SMS to e-mail

I am using a VisorPhone with Voicestream as my provider and my SMS e-mail center number is blank. Does anyone have a valid SMS e-mail center number I could try?

Other chat services?

I have a Deluxe and a VP with VoiceStream. When I try to write an email address in the To: field my visor just beeps at me and does not wrote the character.

Any help would be great!

Problem Solved
Appearently VS phone support gave me the incorrect E-mail center number, once corrected by VS email support to 500 everything is working great!

Another question, is there support for MSM or Yahoo messanger using SMS instead of cell minutes?
