Question Anyone connecting to Earthlink with Visorphone?

I'm struggling with trying to connect my VP to Earthlink. I'm using Voicestream. Is this possible?

Earthlink web support has a document (How to Configure the Palm III, IIIc, V, VII, or m100, Running OS 3.2, 3.3, 3.5, or 3.5.1, for Use With Your EarthLink Account) that tells how to do this:

http://support.earthlink.net/mu/1/p...5/5527.psc.html

There's also a similar document on Handspring's web support site, so it appears this was possible to do, at one time at least.

I get a different answer from EL with each support call to them. The latest is that it will work from a normal modem plugged into a wall, but won't work with a cell phone modem unless you use their provider: OmniSky.

Is anyone using their VP to connect to EL? If so, how are you doing it?

Can't wait to hear if you are dong it!

I'm connecting to Earthlink using my cellphone as a modem (VoiceStream also), so the procedure should be similar.

In Prefs/Connection, I have a custom Connection with the following settings:
Connect to: Modem
Via: Infrared
Dialing: TouchTone
Volume: Low

(in Details)
Speed: 38,400 bps
Flow Ctl: Automatic
Init String: ATZ

In Prefs/Network:
Service: Earthlink
User Name: ELN/telyx (use your own user name here)
Password: use your password
Connection: 8290 (the Connection referred to above)
Phone: use local dial-up number

(in Details)
Connect type: PPP
Idle timeout: Never
Query DNS: checked
IP Address: Automatic checked
Script: none

You might have to use something else for Connection since you're using a VisorPhone (especially the Infrared connection option), but the rest should get you started. These settings work for my Palm m125/Motorola p280, Palm m125/Nokia 8290, and Visor Deluxe/Nokia 8290 (with a little extra sorcery).

Some Numbers Don't Work

Sometimes you have to try a few diff ones in your area. I've had no probs connecting.

Still can't connect

Tom, thanks for your reply. You have given me hope that this is possible.

I'm using Palm OS v.3.5.2H1.5. Here are my settings:

In Prefs/Connection, I've defined Earthlink Dial-up:
Connection Method: Serial to Modem
Dialing: TouchTone
Volume: Low
Speed: 9,600 bps (I've tried faster speeds, also)
Country: US
Flow Ctl: Automatic
Init String: AT&FX4;

In Prefs/Network:
Service: Earthlink
User Name: ELN/username (or [email protected])
Password: password
Connection: Earthlink Dial-up
Phone: local dial-up number (tried several)
Connect type: PPP
Idle timeout: 2 minutes
Query DNS: checked
IP Address: Automatic checked
Script: none

I have also tried unchecking Query DNS and entering Pri and Sec DNS addresses.

When I try to connect using these preferences, the screen shows, "Dialing Earthlink." After 7-8 seconds, my modem light changes from slow blink to fast blink. After 45 seconds, it says "Retrying," then "Dialing Earthlink." After another 45 secs, it says, "Error: No Carrier 0x1102," and the fast blink changes back to slow blink.

I have another connection defined using the Voicestream ISDN connection as shown here in these discussions groups and it works, so I know that my Voicestream is setup properly. I do need to get my Earthlink connection working, though.

I've tried being prompted for the password, but it never gets that far. I'm guessing it has something to do with the Init String. If I remove the Init String completely, I get the No Carrier Error within a few seconds of trying to connect and I never get the fast blinking light on the modem. I think that somewhere between the Init String and the password prompt, something is not right. I don't know what else to try for the Init String. I have tried: AT&FX4;+cbst=71,0,1 (use this to connect to ISDN) and AT&FX4;+cbst=71,0,1;&W (saw this on posting for ISDN connect.)

What kind of Earthlink service do you have? I have regular DSL from home, which allows me to use dial-up numbers when I am traveling. I can connect with the EL dial-up numbers from my laptop, just not using my Prism/Visorphone/Voicestream.

Anyone else out there doing this?

You are connecting using a visorphone with voicestream and Earthlink? What do you think of my settings? Shown in the above post.

My init string is just ATZ. Works with both my Nokia 8290 and Motorola p280. Basically, it tells the modem to "wake up and reset."

My service is 56K dial-up.

What Earthlink phone number?

What Earthlink phone number are you successfully connecting with? I have only tried the 4 Atlanta numbers. Maybe none of them will work.

I tried ATZ and it wouldn't work at all for me.

I use a couple of different Detroit dial-up numbers.
313-293-1020 and 313-254-4492

When I travel (wherever), I just put the area code in before the number and when I get back home, I take the area code out.

If you have the VoiceStream $39.99 plan, you won't have to pay extra for calls to these numbers anyway (free long distance).

It works!

I started trying other Earthlink dialup numbers, and...voila! I am in. It turns out that none of the Atlanta numbers (5 of them) work. I started trying other numbers in the southeast and the 3rd one I tried, worked. Thanks for all your help, Tom.

jwarn3rd, I'm not sure what you are asking. The steps that I went through were:

Had Voicestream phone service and Earthlink DSL
Bought Visor Prism
Went to Handspring's website and downloaded Palm OS patches
Installed patches to Visor
Bought Visorphone (came with Blazer Web Browser)
Installed phone (simple!) and tested the basic phone functions
Went to Handspring's website and downloaded new ver of Blazer
Installed patches to Visor
Called Voicestream and had them "add data" to my service
Configured my network settings as I detailed in earlier post

It turns out that the only problem that I had connecting to Earthlink was that not all of their dial-up numbers work with the Visorphone. After trying the 5 numbers in the Atlanta area and not connecting, I thought that something was wrong with my configuration. There wasn't. I just needed to keep trying more Earthlink dialup numbers until I hit one that worked. I tried 8 numbers before I got it to work. (You don't have to do the download steps, I just wanted to start with the most current versions and fixes.)

When you want to browse the web, just click on the Blazer icon, it automatically connects to the web and you start browsing.

Now, I have bookmarks to white pages and yellow pages and I use it as a phone book when I need. I have bookmarks to my Yahoo mail and Yahoo Finance, and I can instantly bring up a list of all of my stocks and their current prices. Also, I have Vindigo 2.0 (www.vindigo.com) installed on my Prism. This is a great product, which has info, reviews and directions for Food, Movies, Bars, Shops, Music, Museums, etc. It doesn't require a phone (it gets updated information when you sync to your pc while connected to the internet,) but it works great with it. Now, with just my Prism and my Visorphone, I can enter my location in Vindigo, search for the closest Thai restaurant, read a review on the restaurant, get door to door directions, look at a map, and just click on the phone number and the VP dials the restaurant. Very slick!

For patches, go to Handspring's website. Then, go to:
"Support," then "Downloads," then "Updates, Utiilties & Patches."

There is a lot of good info at Handspring's Support site, in general.

Good luck!

I guess my question is....why are you even trying to use Earthlink to connect using your VP. I do not personally owe a VP (going to buy one within the next few days) but i have seen all over this forum that you can connect using Voicestream's ISP of sorts.

In my case, send/receive e-mail while on the road using my Earthlink e-mail.

Can I use a pop3 program like Eudora on the Voicestream ISP that is included with the VP? In other words, if I purchase a VP and do not have an ISP can I still use pop3 and Internet with their connection. Also one more question. I was looking to go with the cheapest plan but it does not include outgoing SMS. Do I really need SMS. I plan on using a pop3 email so does the SMS really do me any good? Thanks!!
