I received my Flip Clip and Blue PalmIII reproduction lid today in the mail (UPS Ground). It came in a small bubble-lined envelope. It came with the Flip Clip, my blue lid, an instructions manual (with a $1 off a Flip Lid purchase coupon), and an invoice.

The instructions aren't really necessary. You just slide the clip on top. Then you snap on your lid. The first thing I noticed is that the colors are much more rich and vibrant than on the website. The blue cover is a pretty good match to my BVDx.

The Flip Clip is a very simple, elegant piece of engineering. It goes on easily, yet firmly. I do not fear taking it on and off (although if you have a Platinum or Prism it will wear paint off--as warned by in the instructions). It's a very nifty little piece.

The lid I received is of course designed for a Palm III. When seated on the face of the visor there is a 3mm gap between the cover and the face of the Visor. The lid makes good contact with the bottom of the Visor though. I will definitely take advantage of my $1 coupon and get a Flip Lid when they come out. It's an ok solution, but I really want the Flip Lid now. But for $4 its a good temporary solution. The $1 coupon was a good idea on Tactilis's part.

The lid doesn't hinge exactly as I thought it would. My BVDx is my first PDA though so I dont' know what a PalmIII lid is supposed to feel like. It definitely locks in place at its hinge point, but I was expecting (misguidely) for it to have some kind of a spring feel although there is a lack of one .

I took some pictures of if in use with a toy digital camera (a "Jam Cam"). It has no flash so I had to find natural light and the picture quality is pretty bad. They were taken in our patio for optimal light.

All and all I'm pretty satisifed with it. I will definitely buy the Flip Lid when it comes out though. In regards to the Flip Clip, it's simple, well designed, and easy to install/remove. For those in market for one of these I would recommend it especially with the coupon for the Flip Lid.

Now I have to go wrap this and stick it under the tree.

curious

Did everyone in our first shipment get their orders alright? Just curious if there is adequate protection in our packaging.

Question Flip Clip & Minstrel S?

Greetings,

I don't suppose this Flip Clip would work with a Prism with a Minstrel S Springboard attached, would it? Also, is there a color that goes with the Prism's cobalt blue?

Thanks,
-cnegrad

Sassman: Wellll, I did get my flip lid. Packaging was perfect. But, I ordered TWO flip clips and TWO graphite translucent (Palm III) lids -- the invoice even SHOWS I ordered two each of the flip clip and cover. Except, there was only ONE each in the envelope. So, I was charged for two lids and two flip clips but received only ONE of each. Well... so far. Here's my invoice/order number: (if you can help) zzby0778 E-mail: [email protected]. Sure would like the order complete (I ordered the other set for my girl friend and, well, she's waiting!!!)

Now, the LOOK of the translucent graphite (Palm III) lid, and black flip clip attached to a Black Vdx is Tres Cool!!

Yes, the Flip-Clip will fit the Prism. You'll probably want the clear one. As for the covers, right now Tactilis is only offering Palm III reproduction covers. I'd hold out for their upcoming Flip-Lid (due Q1 2001) which is going to be a Visor-specific fit. I think they're planning on matching the Prism color as well.

Take a look at the review we just did on it.

The bubble lined envelope provided plenty of protection for my flip clip and cover. Thanks for asking Sastian!

My flip clip and cover arrived without damage. The bubble wrap was worn right through on both sides of the flip clip though. You may want to provide more protection (or cardboard) on those two edges that "protrude".

I got the blue cover for the Prism. Have others found that it curves outward too much and leaves a big gap on the sides? The gap is more than 1/4 inch (4mm). The cover feels flimsy and its operation is "not smooth". I'd be embarrassed if someone used my Prism with this cover on. Hopefully, it's mine that's like this. I hope Tactilis comes out with better covers soon to go with the well engineered clip.

MarkEagle,

Ok, you've said that the Flip Clip will fit the Prism; but please be more specific: Will the Flip Clip (and upcoming Flip Lid) work on the Prism **With the Minstrel S Modem still plugged into the springboard slot?**

Thanks for your response!

From the Flip-Clip review, you should read it.

"Tactilis has tested the Flip-Clip and cover with the following modules and found them to be compatible: Handspring Modem, Innogear MiniJam, Minstrel S, Glenayre @ctivelink, and the VisorPhone. I tested with the Backup, Thinmodem and SpringPort modules."

I didn't have a Minstrel to test with (nor did I have any other oversized modules). I did have an empty ATL Springboard case (the one used by the Handspring Modem) that I think is roughly the same size as the Minstrel. The Flip-Clip and cover will work with the module.

As I said in the review, the reproduction cover is not a good match for the Visor at all. The Flip-Lid, due in Q1 2001, will be a Visor-specific fit and will hopefully eliminate those unsightly gaps. That flimsy feel comes from the cover not sitting flush to the Visor, another thing the Flip-Lid should correct.

cnegrad, If you would go to the thread Prism with Minstrel S review, this is the person to ask questions. There are even color pictures of the "Prism Combo Pac"

A public thank you. Appreciate it! (So will my girlfriend!) So, now we're all patiently but very eagerly awaiting the Visor-specific flip lid! Thanks again for the very quick response!

Lightbulb Updated Pics

Yesterday I got a belated Christmas gift with some money I had left over, a Kodak DC3200 (much better than the JamCam, ). So here are some pics that are actually ok looking, although they are taken on the lowest setting.

Enjoy!

Got mine just fine in the mail.

An observation though... Flip Clip is very well made. Holds securely to my Prism. However, I must agree with the earlier post to wait to buy until the Visor Flip Lid is available. I think Tactilis might have done themselves a disservice by offering their product with the Palm III covers. Perhaps they should have waited to ship until their lid was ready.

My suggestion is also to wait for the Visor lid to be available. MarkEagle is right on target.

To their credit, (as Sastian mentioned before) when their idea first came about, the PIII flip lids were getting *tons* of attention and the color pack had just come out. It seems that they missed a window of opportunity to get in on the hype of those new lids and let Visor users buy them to use with the FlipClip.

I think anyone who's buying FlipClips and lids now knows that the custom lids will be better but doesn't want to wait. In that sense, I don't think Tactilis isn't making many people mad about the less than perfect fit.

As a side note, I'd get one now, but with the cost of their shipping ($4.70), I'm not about to pay shipping twice, even with the $1.00 off!

Arrow

I stopped using Flip-Clip & lid because it started wearing paint off near the hole for microphone(where the lid touches when closed) on my Prism. However, Tactilis does warn in the instruction that too much putting on & off of Flip-Clip may cause paint to come off.

Also I think Flip-Clip may be slightly too small for Prism. Compare MarkEagle's picture in his review & my picture below.
