Hey All,

I'm considering either a visorphone (or CDMA equiv) vs a Omnisky or YadaYada module... It sounds like they will provide similar functionality... but, I seem to recall that the "unlimited" airtime from the wireless modules is only within their network and that if you use a browser to go anywhere else they charge extra, is that right? or did I pull it out a "non-sun-shining-aperture(tm)"?

I'm a bit confused about the choices, and some of these sites don't have good "prebuy" information...

Which one ends up being more expensive? (I pay ~100 for 2 sprint phones, 2000-3000 minutes, so maybe going down to less minutes and using the wireless modules may save me a lot of money

Thanks!

GoAmerica is the only provider I've heard of that charges for "off-provider" application use. I'm using Verizon in the Boston area, and I get unlimited generic IP access.

I had a concern about GoAmerica as well. Their explanation of that asterisked comments was that the extra charge was not for their Minstrel PDA Modemsbut only for the Minstrel Merlin PC card modems. Apparently some companies were using the PC cards for GPS and dispatch for a mobile sales force.

So, I don't get this...

If I load in my new Minstrel S, and it connects... I then go over and load up let's say "AOL IM" and I would accrue a charge from Yada Yada. I hate calling customer serivce, it seems that sometimes all they do is guess on the answers and hope that the element of surprise would be a purchasing benefit for yourself.

How is everyone's YadaYada. I just bought because I figure for unlimited wireless, with coverage in my city, and the price of a dinner with my girlfriend and myself it can't be anything but a benefit. Am I dillusional, with regards to only this subject I mean...?

Now it depends on what service you are on, but if it's a service like YadaYada or OmniSky that uses Verizon as the carier, then your only limiting factor is what PalmOS can do, and what you can do with that 19.2k bandwidth.

As for using a service YadaYada or OmniSky, I'm not sure I can wrap my brain around this one; Lets see if i explain this correctly.

You pay an intermediary company to provide you with something that you can get for 10-15 dollors cheeper from Verizon or ATT. and in fact it is the same thing. Explain this

YADAYADS/OMNISKY V. VERIZON/AT&T

Actually, its not the same thing. If chose to go with verizon, it will cost me less in New York. However, YadaYada is nationwide service as it switches between verizon and at&t depending on location. So, if you travel or desire to use the service while vacationing in florida, for example, you would need the yadayada/omnisky service as opposed to going with local service. Is it worth the price difference? that's dependent on your use.

I believe Yada Yada is only Verizon, not AT&T too. That is what the CSR told me on the phone.

As far as I can grasp it, sure, you could just go to Verizon to get service - but you would have to either buy the modem from them (at full retail price - if they even carry the modem)or carry the modem over from another service. Personally, I would love to go with Verizon's PalmOS access plan - all you can eat for $24.99. But since a) Verizon isn't likely to match the YY/OS modem deals, because handheld wireless isn't their primary business, and b) for the same reason, tech support will probably be NIL, you're better off paying the premium and getting a full package.

BTW - Sam: I like your signature, but if you're quoting what I think you're quoting, shouldn't it be "Never Again", not "never more"?

Verizon's tech support isn't that bad, but it also isnt YY or OS either. While they robly won't match modem deals that YYandOS have I suspect that the decrese in service charges would compinsate for thoes deals.

If that palm deal from Verizon were only accessable with the Pocket PC then I'd be in heven. (because they don't, I'm going to be forced to set up a 802.11 WLAN, what a shame.

As for my sig, it is inteded to be from one of G`kar's speaches, and despite hours of searching through the downbelow archive I haven't found the execat wording. If we were on the same track then you'll know what I'm talking about, if not then I haven't made too much of a fool out of my self. <*>

Out of my own curiosity, I called Verizon tonight. Their MobileIP Palm plan is only for the Palm III and V series (with the Minstrel sleds). The customer service rep had no idea what a Handspring Visor was - and I figured that didn't bode well.

Oh - getting back to the sig for a sec...I remember the scene you're referring to, and as I recall it was just after the fall of Narn. G'kar was making reference to Earth's WWII with the "Never Again" comment. "Never more" would seem to make reference to Poe's "The Raven", which wouldn't really have applied in that situation.

realize that with the plans from Verizon you are simply getting raw bandwidth, you need to know how to load on applications (which for this group isn't an issue) but YY or OS make this alot easier by offering a full robust package.
