Lightbulb VPL -> Edge -> VPL

Well, my Platinum Graphite arrived today, and I couldn't be happier. Now that I've gone on the trek of having an Edge (after having VDX Graphite and VPL Silver), I think I can give some honest (unbiased?) advice about the Edge as it compares to the Platinum.

- When it comes right down to it, the weight difference between the two is negligible (I don't have a postal scale here, so don't quote me... but I don't feel a difference). The Platinum does feel a little "fuller" in your pocket, but it's a different form factor...

- The Edge is about 1/8 faster than the Platinum for some reason. The difference is a little noticable now that I'm back with VPL, but I'll live.

- I honestly don't believe that the Edge's $400 price tag is justified, considering Prism is the same price.

- Having an Edge might tempt you to put it in your back pocket, which could result in cracking your $85 screen, and just making you want to go back to your trusty Platinum...

- The Edge's Springboard sled is possibly the most horrible idea Handspring has ever come up with... even modules that fit flush in it look goofy and make the thing more cumbersome than a VDX/VPL form factor... don't even get me started on bigger modules like the VisorPhone...

- Metal scratches, plastic doesn't (except the paint on VPL Silver). All it takes to scratch the Edge is a key...

- I can finally use my Stowaway again! No waiting for ThinkOutside to get their act together...

- We've heard that Edge is 1% of the PDA market... with the accessories (or lack thereof) the Edge has, I believe it... the DX/PL form factor has accessories out the wazoo, and always will.

- One word: Tarnish

- The VPL/VDX form factor actually has a decent flipcover... don't count on this with the Edge.

This is about all I can think of at the moment... I'll add more if I think of any (and if there's interest in the thread)... I hope this somehow helps someone deciding whether or not to migrate from a VPL/VDX to an Edge.

I honestly feel that it is worth $400. But not in this market at this point in time.

I put mine in my back pocket all the time. That's the only place I carry it.

It ain't easy.

No argument there.

Has more for it than the m500. Of course, I don't know the market share the m500 has managed to garner, but I doubt it's 1%.

If I were in to flip covers, I'd say the one included with the edge couldn't be beat, not to mention it's standard.

Well, so far I've managed to overcome the strong urge to "put it in my back pocket" and sit on it. It fits just fine in my front pocket, why would I want to put it in my back pocket?

- The Edge's Springboard sled is possibly the most horrible idea Handspring has ever come up with... even modules that fit flush in it look goofy and make the thing more cumbersome than a VDX/VPL form factor... don't even get me started on bigger modules like the VisorPhone...

I only use the backup module, so it isn't an issue at all. The size of a Visor Delux or Platinum remains as large as it is, with or without a module. (A Handspring official actually just came out and admitted that the "option" of being able to add on modules is what helps sell Handsprings, and that most users actually don't even own a module.) I dont' believe that the people on these boards who have five, six modules are typical HS users.

After having had a Palm Vx, I just can't see going back to a larger size PDA. I carry mine around with me *everywhere*, so a compact size is a major issue. I've read people who say "having had color, I'll never go back to greyscale. Well, for me, having owned several PDA's, having had a small, compact PDA, I'll never go back to the Palm III size model.

- One word: Tarnish

Two words: Polish cloth. I mean, common... I spent about two minutes with a polish cloth, and it looked like new. Yeah... I'll have to schedule that in every three or four weeks.... bummer!

- The VPL/VDX form factor actually has a decent flipcover... don't count on this with the Edge.

You're right! The Edge comes with what is in my opinion, the BEST built in metal cover of any handheld I've seen! It totally eliminates any need for an add-on cover to protect the screen, and it adds vertually NO additional size and minimal weight! It's perfect! Why would ANY third party manufacturer bother trying to *sell* an add on flip cover, when the one which comes with the Edge is so damn good??? Who'd buy it???

Bottom line is, that's why they make chocolate and vanilla ice cream. For my purposes, the slim design, fast (actually, I've seen that the Edge and HandEra are the fastest Palm OS devices) processor, and excellent battery life makes the Edge, FOR ME, a winner!

I have to agree. I don't own a Edge but a friend of mine upgrade when his graffitti stopped working. He loves it .Cover rocks, I am jealous of that being a M505 owner. Stylus is nicely weighted feels nice. He to only used the springboard slot for backups. Leaves the BM at work and backs up once a day and syncs at home. I really like the unit myself . Its the only HS that I feel would pull me from my M505. I miss my flip cover of my IIIxe.
