MemPlug CF or FlashPlus?

Compact Flash seems to be the way to go for me. Good, cheap, reliable, extensively available.

Which would you choose? These two seem the best. I have heard FlashPlus is more stable, I need that, but I have not confirmed it. Is it true?

They are the same price, so it just depends on its performance.

Also, I ruled out the Matchbook Drive because MemPlug CF has all that PI software. Is this reasonable?

Memplug! No doubt in my mind! I love that it doubles as a backup module!

Memplug vs. Flashplus

I guess you've had no problems with MemPlug? Or do you tolerate soft resets, etc.?

Personally, I can't handle those. Reliability over anything else any day. I hate hassle. I want a straight shot.

Have you tried the FlashPlus?

By the way, you mention you use it backup your data, but do you use it in any advanced functions like playing video, huge databases (encyclopedia, doctor's manuals, etc.)?

Thanks!

I used to have soft resets, but that seems to be fixed with the new firmware.

I have not tried the FlashPlus.

I use it for backup, mass storage, and the occassional video. I store huge files such as Mapopolis maps, encyclopedias, dictionaries, game ROMs, and the like. I love having 128MB of extra storage! I don't do video much because there is no audio.

I have tried FlashPlus (CF), MemPlugCF, and MemPlugSM.

I prefer CF over SM, and FlashPlus over MemPlug. In fact, before my Prism died, I was going to switch back from MemPlugSM to FlashPlus.

MemPlug has a couple more built-in programs, but I thought that FlashPlus was both more elegant (it fit the Visor better), and more stable. I like the way the FlashAdaptor (FA) software more than I do the Portable Innovations (PI) stuff does.

Minor point, but I REALLY liked the way CSpotRun worked better in FA than in PI versions! (Well, not so minor, considering how much I used it as a book/text reader!)

What do you mean "it fit the visor better"? I have one of the first Memplugs, so it isn't flush with the Visor, but all the new ones are flush. Can you elaborate?

Flash Plus

I've heard about the same. Slightly better in the favor of Flashplus (software and history), but Memplug was playing catch up and now seems caught up.

Who do you think will take the next step? Or IS there a next step?

Anyone have the 1Gb CF card? Would like to know how much THAT one cost and what it's used for.

Would be neat if one could use the visorphones headjack as audio, and play video. Then you could have both!

Or perhaps a separate audio device, with high quality sound that could be connected to a 5.1 system (Digital RCA, Stereo RCS, or maybe even optical - but I'm dreamin).

Since you can now add a HARD DRIVE, then you should be able to handle some basic video / audio.

Comments?

The 1GB Microdrive made by IBM is a Type II compact flash. AFAIK, neither the FlashPlus or the Memplug is compatible with type II cards. Besides, the Microdrive would probably drain the Visor's batteries in under an hour!

The only Palm device currently out that can handle the Microdrive is the Handera 330...and that uses 4 AAA's and it still chews through the battery. BTW, the 1GB Microdrive can be found for as low as $270 (www.ecost.com) or as high as $395

My error- it was the MemPlugSM that did not fit flush- it protrudes out the back some. Not much, but it added to the thickness of the already thick Prism.

All I can say is that my FlashPlus and my SanDisk 256 meg CF card have never given me a moments trouble since I got them last year.

Memplug SM

I definitely recommend the Memplug SM. It is VERY stable and barely uses up any power. I also have a Memplug CF and it didn't take long for me to corrupt the CF card As far as speed problems with the Memplug SM, don't believe it!! Sure, before firmware v2.00, the SM version was slower than molassus on Pluto but afterward, the speed was much improved and the difference between the CF version and SM version is unnoticable.

As far as FlashPlus goes, the lack of included software other than a file mover and CSpotRun is a minus for me. Sure you can get other software to fill in the blanks, but most of the best card software (backup, file access) is made by PIT And you will want to get a new file manager anyway. If you have a visor deluxe though, I would recommend FlashPlus because PiDirect doesn't work with OS 3.1 devices.
