Same problem here, emailed them and got a response, but that didn't work either, so I emailed them back, still waiting on that.

"Sterling,

Happy to help. Here are some additional steps to check:

1. The file folder it creates to sync photos will be C:\TargusHandcam (not C:\handcam). Note: this is created once the sync is enabled
2. If files have been moved to the camera's memory, they can't be transferred. They need to be stored in the PDA memory
3. Sync the PDA once before saving snapshots to it.
4. The system must be rebooted after the HandCam software is installed. It will normally sync afterward.
5. Please ensure the HotSync software was installed before the Targus HandCam software. If not please uninstall and reinstall the Targus HandCam software"

Question Got Mine

I got mine last night - the first shot I took were blurred and yellow, but I've gotten better results. I didn't like the manual - Didn't seem to have ANYTHING on the focusing of the unit.

Although I can see the Hotsync deposited pictures, the webcam functions is still not up. I've had Driver problems, USB power problems, and now multiple problems with the software either detecting the camera or linking with it in Webcam mode.

Targus's support number proved a 20 minute wait for an uniformed databaseless individual that was zero help and would "escalate my call"

Its better than what I had before which is nothing unless you count a Gameboy camera that's around someplace...

Most of the webcam issues I've come across have been due to having two apps trying to access the camera at the same time.

For example, be sure to shut down the Targus Handcam application before running Yahoo Messenger's webcam option. If you don't, you can get 'camera not installed' errors.

It sounds unlikely, but is anyone aware of a programmers API for the module?

Is there one for the EyeModule?

Thanks,
Steve

Dampeoples,

I got the exact same reply as you. They also mentioned looking under the system or system32 folder for a file called HandCamCond.dll but I couldn't find it. I didn't find it on the installation disk either.

I'm getting pretty frustrated. I emailed them about it so I'll give them one more chance to rectify this.

BTW, how do you go about returning something you bought from buy.com? Do you need to get a mailing sticker or something like that?

Havn't gone through the process of getting the RMA yet, but read on this or post (dennisl) that it's fully automated. I'm awaiting a new response too, i'll post it, post yours if you get it before me!

I found the dll HandCamCond.dll in the Win982000 folder under Drivers

Doesn't get me a conduit, but the file is there.

Lightbulb

Let's try being a bit aggressive here...

Anyone who has the handcam conduit working, can you do the following steps for us poor folks who can't get it to sync...

1) What version of windows are you running?
2) What version of the Palm Desktop?
3) Do a search for HandCamCond.dll and tell us where it is on your harddrive

Also, does anyone know where HotSync keeps the list of conduits it has?

Thanks,

Nacht

Left click on the hotsync icon (mine is in my system tray) and select custom, mine doesn't show anything about handcam.

Sorry, should have cleared about 'Where does HotSync keep a list of the conduits'...

I know you can click and customize to get a list, but how does hotsync build that list? Is it in the registry? Does it do it on the fly?

I think that's the piece that missing.

Not really, no. I get more crash problems with the HandCam alone than with the VisorPhone/HandCam combo. But honestly, the only way I can determine that it's not solely the VP causing problems is that I've got a Memplug that I swap out constantly, too. And I've only had roughly two more HandCam related crashes since that first Hard Reset crash. They usually come when trying to take a snapshot or immediately AFTER the module is removed (one each).

What are you swapping (HandCam to VisorPhone, VisorPhone to Handcam?), and when does the crash occur?

1) Windows ME, upgrade version from 98 SE (which was a clean install version).
2) Palm Desktop Version 3.0.1, HotSync Manager Version 3.0.2Hb
3) HandCamCond.dll is in my C:\Windows\System folder, is 188,416 bytes large and was last modified on 8/28/2001 at 5:07pm

Also, my main Palm apps (Palm Desktop and all its buddies) was installed into the default folder. I used to customize it all, but I've since learned that, with certain applications, it's best to leave 'em be.

Handcam and Macs

When I first heard about the handcam I was excited. But the big question I had was does this thing work with Macs. I called Targus, and the tech support and customer support seemed baffled that it was even available for sale yet. I now see that on Handspring's web site, that it appears to be compatible with a Mac. According to the product info for the Handcam on the Handspring page:
"Then load the shots onto your PC or Macintosh and email them or keep them in your own photo archives. "
So are you finding that there is a Mac conduit on the installer?

After reading the issues with the handcam, i'm thinking of going ahead and getting the eyemodule 2.

I just checked - there is no Mac software on the Targus installer cd, just windows stuff.
If you find can an old version of Virtual PC (I'm using 3.0), it works fine.

Just to let all of you know, we have finally made contact with Targus, and I should be getting a review unit of the Handcam next week. I get it for 90 days; I will do a review of it, plus a comparison of it and the eyemod2 hopefully.

I HOPE that I don't have the problems that everyone has had so far with the conduits... i hope

I didn't even think of that. That's a good idea. So do you have to disable hotsync under os9 so just Virtual PC will pick up the hotsync?

Nope. I installed the pc palm desktop software, then the targus software into the virtual win 98 and then hotsynced. The images from the handcam appeared in the targus handcam folder. I setup the vpc software to see my documents folder as drive F and then just dragged and dropped the images (jpegs) into my documents 'folder'. The movies are .avi.

Yellow color to pictures

Being in Photography for the past 16 years, it looks like the yellow cast is coming from Incandescant lighting (Normal lightbulbs). If you take a normal picture with film under this lighting, the same yellow cast appears, but this is usually compensated for in printing.

I also suspect that many digital cameras automatically compensate for this coloring by applying software filters. I am sure that the Handcam has no such software filters.

My Eyemodule 1 camera does not work well at all inside. I only get OK results outside or in very bright natural light inside. The literature of the Handcam probably mentions this somewhere...

Try importing the yellowed images into a good photo program and filtering the yellow out. I think Photoshop has a filter for removing the yellow cast.

I like the concept of the Targus springboards (The voice recorder and now the Handcam), but they do not ever seem to upgrade the software. I have been looking for upgrades for the voice module for months now.

Good luck with your cameras!

Doug

The handcam desktop software has an incandescant/flourescent switch, but I can't get the conduit to work, so I can't test this
