Question

I was going to get some WriteRights for my PDA, and I was just wondering if I should get just the WriteRights or should I get the PDA survival kit? Are the other things that come in the kit useful? What exactly are the Brain Wash thingies? Do I need 12 of them...will they go bad after sitting around for months unused? What good is the Karma Cloth? And, I'm not sure what the pencap stylus are...are they just regular stylii? Are they worth getting the whole kit for, or should I just stick with the WriteRights only?

Thanks for any help!

Here's the deal with the Survival Kit.

Brain Wash packets are basically kits to clean your screen. A kit comes with one moist towellete to clean it and one to dry it. They are sealed so I don't believe they will go bad. You're supposed to clean your screen with this before putting on a WriteRight, although you can obviously clean your screen with this anytime.

The Karma Cloth are soft chamois (2) that are used to wipe down your screen whenever it needs it. At first, I thought that you would only need them if you did not use a WriteRight (they do a great job of removing dust, grime, etc.), but then I tried wiping down my WriteRight with the Karma Cloth and it did a great job.

I'm not sure about the pencap stylus because my Survival Kit came with the Fingertip Stylus which I immediately tossed because it is useless; I couldn't write to save my life with that thing. Not that I would be caught dead with that thing on my finger. Believe it or not, Concept Kitchen actually believes people would wear these things as rings when they weren't writing with it. Anyway, that's probably why they switched to the pencap stylus. I'm sure the pencap stylus is basically the same premise-an emergency stylus for when you lose your primary one.

The Survival Kit comes with 4 WriteRights of 3 different sizes. One size is for full size WinCE devices, the other is for Psion (I think), and the last size is Palm III/WinCE devices(palm-sized). What they ask you to do is return the WriteRights that are not for your application and they will mail you an additional 12 of the ones that you kept. I was a little leary at first, but I tried it and after about 6 weeks, my 12 WriteRights arrived at my door.

I hope this helps your decision.

GregMoore:

The offer comes inside the box when you get your kit. There a special pouch/mailer thing for you to send the other WriteRights back.

you could give the palm v ones to me. :-) Actually, I just ordered a pda survival kit for the palm v from buy.com. I don't know if it will have extras for other size pda's or not...if so, and there's no slip to return the extras, maybe I could trade with someone that has extra ones for the palm v. I'll wait and see what comes in my package..

Here's the scoop on the PDA survival kits. Mine did not have the mailer inclosed to return the non-fitting WR's...so...I emailed CS...and they said:

quote:

If you ordered the Kit directly from our web site or by phone all the WriteRights should fit the device you selected when placing your purchase...

If you purchased the Kit elsewhere then the mailer was left out during packaging.

We apologize for this inconvenience. However, if you send us your name, address, the PDA you are using and a phone number we will be happy to send you the correct WRs, along with an envelope to send the incorrect ones back to us. We will also include a small gift for your troubles.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention. We look forward to fixing this for you asap.

Sincerely,

Wink

Poor Tim Nugent at Concept Kitchen must be getting fed up with sending that email to people...! I got a very similar one from him when I found my (second) PDA Survival Kit didn't have the return pouch in it. It also now only includes one Karma Cloth.
Top mark to them for trying to keep people happy, but I don't think the tie up with Fellowes is working for them. The new Survival Kit doesn't seem such good value - who would ever need 5 pen cap styili, and you have to contact them to return the wrong WriteRights.
I still like the protection and glare reduction of the WriteRights though - I just think I'll buy them on their own next time and find another screen cleaner.
