The Visor (and Palm) home screen is kind of weird to somebody used to Windows or Macintosh OS.
In Windows and Mac, the "file managers" show both programs and data files (e.g., you will see both Microsoft Word and the letter you wrote to Aunt Hattie).
In the Visor, you will only see the programs.
The only way to see the data files is to use a program that will handle said files and use its file load function. For instance, you can use TealDoc to see what doc files you have on your Visor.
Visor files that are on your host computer (that is, not yet hotsynched) end in ".prc" if they are programs and ".pdb" if they are data file.
And like Mr. Eagle said, newly installed programs land in the "Unfiled" category, so may not be initially visible.
