Help appreciate on new unit buying decision

I just broke the screen on my Platinum, so am looking to get another PDA. I have some (very newbie, I think) questions about the new Handspring line:

Will the Pro, Neo, and Edge work with my Stowaway and the current cradles (I have one at work and one at home).

I find myself wanting a lot more than 8 MB, and I'd like to be able to run my apps off the expansion memory. Apparently this can be done with the VFS feature in the later OSes. Can I use VFS with the Pro, Neo, and Edge? If so, with which add-on memory solutions? Can I use it with the 16 MB springboard, or am I looking at having to get the springboard that supports SD and buying a SD memory card?

It's between the above-named handhelds, and the Palm M505 for me, because color (even washed-out color) might be a nice feature. If I can't use my stowaway and need to buy a SD card anyway, that makes the M505 a bit more attractive. The only unattractive part of getting an M505 would be getting the unit up to speed. With another handspring, I'd just dump the backup module onto the unit. With a Palm, I think I'd have to just hotsync from the computer, with "desktop overrides handheld" set, but I imagine I'd have to re-install all the executables by hand?

Thanks!

Joe

I'd go with the pro. the cradles will work, but might not charge it. 16mb makes the world of difference. color is fine,(i had a prism before) but if its for work, you can't beat it. plus all your old modules will work, and the stowaway. (no thank you sony, i have a cd player in my car!) hope this helps! my two cents.

If you want to use your stowaway, you have to go with the Pro or Neo. If you want more memory, then go with the Pro. The Edge has its own version of the Stowaway and does not work with the Stowaway you have.

As far as VFS goes, it doesn't work with the Flash modules. Your two options are the FlashPlus CF adapter and the Memplug. Both have very nice VFS implimentations. The Memplug, however, does have more options when it comes to card types (CF, Smartmedia, Memory Stick, and SD/MMC). CF and Smartmedia are the best because: 1) the adapters are available right now; 2) CF and SmartMedia cards are often times much cheaper than MS and SD/MMC, however prices for third-party MS cards are coming down quite a bit; 3) the adapters for CF and Smartmedia are cheaper than those for MS and SD/MMC. If you decide on CF, obviously you have a choice of modules. Remember, VFS is a set of system calls used by some programs to work with files on a memory card. Flash modules act more like RAM than something like an SD card, i.e. they don't use folders and the Visor sees it as flash.

Stowaway WILL Work with Edge

As I recall, if I am correct, your stowaway WILL work with the edge, if you purchase a $15 adapter available either through Think Outside or Targus...this is a lot cheaper than having to get a PPK for the M505

Hi Joe,

Nice to see someone from BF over here (I'm gadgetman over there).

I recently went through a similar decision with my run-over VDX. I really like the form factor of the M505, but I ended up getting a Pro for the 16MB and the price was right (the staples deal thing). I don't really have any accessories that require another visor except the cases, but the 16MB really attracted me. I decided that I didn't need color yet. The Sony's have nice screens and the jog dial (I liked the T610 with the round app buttons, not the un-ergonomic bars that the T615 has). Unless you really want color, get the Pro (or a Neo and do the memory upgrade). I like the Li-Ion battery; it seems to hold enough charge for at least a week of use and charges quickly. Your old cradles will work (won't charge), the Stowaway will work. I'm not sure about VFS, though I may try a Memplug soon.

p

edited to change "N61x" to "T61x"

Hmm, I searched but can't find anything. Targus, has the keyboard, a sync cable, and case for the Visor Edge, no adapter. Think Outside doesn't even list the Edge in their product catalog. Do you know where I can get that adapter? Thanks!

Lightbulb Try this...

I originally found out about this from a Visor Village Discussion:

http://www.visorvillage.com/boards/...ssages/729.html

Apparantly, it is made by Targus and the Part # is PA86UX ($14.99) and is only available by calling tech support at 888-970-7678, and the Adapter will convert the 12-Pin Edge connector to an 8-Pin Visor connector, but will only work correctly with the stowaway.

I personally don't know anything about this, so don't blame me for misinformation or anything...I'm going off what I am reading.

Sounds like its worked for one guy. I can probably find a Visor keyboard cheaper than an Edge one, and just buy the adapter. Thanks for the note! If I get it, I'll tell you guys what happened!
