Got My Prism!

I did research on PDA's mainly on the internet, and in forums. I have never seen a Prism on person. But based on my research I figured a (refurbished) Prism was the best deal for me.

I got my Prism today, and it is a thing of beauty. The unit is like new - no sratches on the screen or anywhere else. Really nice display, and fast.

I have noticed a very subtle periodic flicker in the screen. But this is so minor and seldom that I can live with it.

The flicker topic has come up many times since the Prism first came out, (my original unit was fine, my replacement unit had the flicker problem)

I did apply the contrast utility, as well as update the o/s version. I "think" it helped - maybe.

The flicker problem seems to vary in degree from unit to unit. More than the occasional flickering, my main grip about the Prism is the very pixelated screen. Try reading a novel or even a short story on your Prism and you'll see what I mean.

Startdust: The low-res screen is definitely not the most suitable/pleasing for reading e-books on the Prism. I�ve tried a bunch of different fonts and, oddly, the standard Large Bold font seems, to me, to be the most usable (on the monochrome Visors, lighter fonts look better to me).

Can you guys tell me if your screens display the same characteristic? If you hold the prism at a normal distance � say 1 foot away - and you show a non-white screen, does the brightness of the screen appear different to each eye � enough so to be kind of annoying? When I alternate, between closing my right, and left eyelids, the screen looks brighter to my right eye. Is it just my screen (please, no comments about my eyes )?

I've found that keeping my Prism about 18 inches away from my eyes while reading helps. I also use Verdana (0) for e-books and Talls Fonts New for apps such as Datebook to enhance readability. Tilting the unit at a certain angle or changing the background color doesn't seem to make much of a difference. Light yellow or blue can improve the contrast but it can be tiring to the eyes.

I think there's really not much you can do to fix the problem. Since I do a lot of reading and word processing on my Prism, I've decided to change to a hi-res PDA as soon as the battery starts to show signs of senility.

The colors on mine are stronger when tilted to the left and paler when tilted to the right. Maybe that is what you are seeing. Brightness of whites is not affected by tilt.

I too have to hold it about 18" away to read reasonably well, otherwise it is too pixelated. Flickering use to be worse, now it occurs only about once every 5 min. The contrast utility may have helped.
