The Garmin found way more satellites (like about 8) and also gives its view on its own accuracy - I got to 18ft in one case. Thanks for your comparison. I guess in this case you get what you pay for. I'm curious though, as my HandyGPS gets at least 8 to 10 sattelite (sometimes more) with no problems. I guess I'm one of the lucky ones with a unit with no problems. Mine tracks within a minute and I don't get any blanking problems unless I go under a big overpass.

So based on the generally okay performance that others seem to be getting I am assuming that mine is one of the units affected by the faulty components (or whatever their problem was). If I find out this is status-quo operation for the HandyGPS than I am going to return it, and probably just wait for something better to show up.

I would suspect that you have a defective unit as I have not run into this problem at all. Mine has worked solid as a rock so far.

Mike,

Maybe I have a defective unit, too, as yours sounds pretty good. I would love if you could find someone in your area with another GPS device and then run a sside-by-side comparison. This way, we might be able to come up with some metrics which we can use to decide whether or not our HandyGPS units should be returned to Nexian for replacement.

Anyone out there in Miami with another handheld GPS device?

my handygps unit kept locking up my visor and had major problems trying to acquire any more than 2 satellites, even in "perfect" conditions (new batteries, no hacks activated, clear open sky at the beach, etc.)

i sent nexian a letter and they told me to return the unit. just yesterday, i received a voice mail (yes, they called me) asking me to give them a call concerning my unit. i suspect that they want to tell me about the "hardware update" and that i will have to wait for a new unit.

i will call them this afternoon and get the scoop....

cool - let us know what they say. It appears that us pre-order folks are in fact just paying beta testers, then? Does anyone from Nexian read this forum? They might like to post some comments if they do...
