Cool

Okay...if a cell phone has an available data cable--does that mean that I should be able to use the phone as a modem with the Visor? I assume I'll need some type of cable to connect the data cable to the visor (like from cables4pdas).

Can I use any of the Nokia phones to surf the net with my Visor?

thanks

You can use the Nokia 8290 (offered by voicestream among others). With that phone, no cable is needed as you can connect the phone and visor via IR.

I can get this phone in the Bay Area using Cingular wireless (aka Pacific Bell). What I've heard is that the maximum data rate is 9600.

Is this true, good, bad or what?

Otherwise, I'm leaning towards the AT&T wireless mainly because they have a $75 rebate on new service, plus $30 rebate on the Motorola V2397 (or something like that).

Wireless would have just made my prism even more cool and justifiable!

AT&T is a TDMA network and therefore will not work, or at least is not supported by them. Plus they charge an outrageous per kb fee if you do figure out how to get it to work.

So does this mean I should get Verizon or Sprint? They don't have the specials going, but I guess I could live with one of them.

Don't forget that most of the cell phone cables the providers sell are for a 9-pin serial laptop port. You will need a sync cable and an adapter to hook the two together.

Are there other cable solutions?

For CDMA (Sprint/Verizon):

NYSEBull provides cables the directly connect Motorola StarTAC & Timeport phones. Another company is also producing them (Search the boards for the name, supposed to be avilable the next coming weeks). He, as well as this site, are working on a cable for some Samsung phone and he is also working on a cable for the Kyocera (Qualcomm) Thin Phone (860/1960/2760). Hes delayed these cables though because of connector shoratages (Bummer ).

For most other data cpable phones you can, as mvogeli said, purchase a data cable (anywhere from $30-$130) and connect it to a serial cable. You'll also need a null modem adapter inbetween ($5). MarkSpace offers a modem cable with a built in null modem adapter for $35, with plans to offer a short 6-inch version soon specifically for cell phone users.

The speed limit is 14.4k on current CDMA networks (Sprint & other of the next couple of years will roll out upgraded networks with things like CDMA2000 which feature minimum connection speeds of 56k, but this will be a while in America & could possibly require new phones(?) for full roll out)

For GSM (Cingular):

Its my understanding that everyone one of these phones is data capable. Some, like the previously mentioned Nokia, feature IR. Others, such as some Ericsson, can add IR through an adapter. I believe some have serial cables that can connect similar to the above data cable -> Null Modem -> Serial cable (But don't hold my word to that). Xircom also offers data cables for GSM phones that connect to their modem.

GSM is indeed 9600.

The other data cable company is www.thesupplynet.com and they promise to ship cables for Motorola and Samsung phones on the 15th of March and Sanyo by the end of the month. These are the one piece cables directly from the Visor to the phone. They're all $29.95. I'm waiting on a Sanyo cable, and it's a race to see if NYSEBull or supplynet can get one available first...

After a very positive experience doing business with NYSEBull, I hope he wins

Cool Cables

I have had a positive experience with markSpace and their cable. They suggested a modification to allow my Samsung 3500 (finally!) to work with it.

NYSEBull seems to also be a great guy - he posted what he has discovered in the 3500 making it freely available for anyone to make their own cable. Unfortunately he has lost his supplier for the Samsung cables and won't be able to meet demand at this point... he is a good guy though.

I have pre-ordered one from the Supply-Net site and patiently await to see if it a:delivers and b:works as promised..

If you are a Samsung owner, we have a whole thread over at http://discussion.visorcentral.com/...?threadid=11566 if you are interested in seeing where we ended up!

Good luck!

As others have mentioned, there are two potential suppliers: www.cables4pdas.com and www.thesupplynet.com - the supplynet say that a cable for the Samsung 3500, 6100 and 8500 phones will be shipping on the 15th of March.
