Does anyone know how many springboard third-party developers are currently out there -- I have a presentation tomorrow regarding Handspring and the Visor and would like to use this statistic, however, have been unable to find any concrete numbers...

Thanks

Joe

Exclamation

In VC's "Handspring's 4th Q Results" article, James writes:

There are now 4000+ Springboard module developers -- 1500 more than when Handspring published their prospectus

Evidently, the vast majority of them, like Thincomm and Good Technologies, are flying below radar until they have a product ready to ship.

Well, what's more likely is that the vast majority registered just to investigate the technical details of the Springboard slot. Most are probably not actively working on Springboard projects (or are working on internal or personal projects that will never be made commercially available).

Note: James was gleamed the 4000 from a Handspring Press Release that he reference in that VC News item, though the link to that PR has now moved. The actual lines where the information in the Press Release comes from reads:
quote:
"This quarter, we invested heavily in new product development, international expansion, and developer programs," Dubinsky added. "We have been particularly pleased with the growing acceptance of our Springboard platform in the developer community, with over 4,000 developers now registered for our program."

Though this quote from Dubinsky infers that there are 4000 springboard developers, it actually only says that Handspring has 4000 developers registered in the developers program. Does not say how many of them are actually developing springboards. Also Handspring has two levels of their developers program. The first is free, and the second costs $6000 a year. Now if they gave the number of developers registered in the second level, that would probably be closers to the number of serious springboard developers.

P.S. I am one of those 4000 registered developers (at the free level), and I currently have no plains to develop a springboard.
