There's not much you can do about the front piece of glass. As somebody has already pointed out, it is part of the digitizer and a crack in the glass means a break in the circuit.
Now, if you had a Palm (PIII or greater), you could cannibalize the resistive screen out of that and plug it into the Visor.
Disassembly is pretty simple- remove the four screws (two in the springboard bay), snap the thing apart, being careful to unplug the cable between the two halves. To get to the digitizer, simply unsnap the LCD at the sides and pull it out, being careful of the two plastic posts at the top.
Use a knife blade around the perimiter of the glass (between the glass and metal frame) to loosen the adhesive joint (it only goes in a few millimeters) and remove the digitizer (unplug it too).
Swendor: it seems like your Visor simply isn't snapped into the plastic at the bottom- merely take it apart and make sure to snap the metal frame under the catches on the lower sides of the plastic.
