I am unable to install my visor cradle (usb) under windows 2000. windows detects the cradle when i hit the hotsync button...but it keeps installing the cradle incorrectly.

Post Palm Desktop version

Make sure you are using the newest version of the Palm Desktop from Handspring's site. The older versions are known to have this kind of problem. If that isn't it, then maybe wiser minds than mine will have an answer.

true...but handspring charges extra for it. serial is the tried and true.

i do get all warm and fuzzy knowing that i have a usb cradle..but if it doesnt work...

plus...after the first sync..why would you need speed of usb ?

HANDSPRING = GAY.

HANDSPRING = GAY.

AvantGo, installing databases, syncing eyemodule pix to your pc...

BTW, some people think it insults homosexuals to try to use the word 'gay' as an insult.

USB also useful for MP3 transfers. Also, USB provides POWER, which is useful in so many ways....

true...but im so over all the expansion slot in the handspring...i mean... the modules cost so much.

usb as a tech is good...but i dont know how important it is in the realm of palm os pda's with beta driver functionality.

Wink My $.02

I wouldn't agree with the Beta driver assessment. I have used my USB cradle and USB sync cable on several Win2K machines without a problem. I sync with Avantgo, maps for my Geode, etc. and it works great. It could be something with your machine/setup that is causing the problem. Having synced with both a serial cradle and a USB cradle with my Visor, I would much prefer the USB sync any day.

As for your problems with syncing, do you have any other USB devices, or is this your first one? If this is your first USB device, check in the machines BIOS to make sure USB is turned on. Many PC manufacturers ship with this turned off (Why, is beyond me). If you have more than one USB port, make sure you try all of them. Since you are running Win2k, I assume this is a current machine (PII or later) so the problem Intel had with earlier USB controllers on Pentium MMX machines shouldn't apply. If you are running multiple USB devices through a USB hub, make sure you have an active (powered) hub. Some USB devices draw more current than others, so a powered hub helps keep the power levels constant for all devices and reduces the occurrence of weird detection problems. Let us know if any of these work. Good Luck!

I've used both the latest PalmDesktop from handspring and from Palm to HotSync with W2K at home and at work.

The only time I've had problems is when I have the FindIgnoreHack 1.4 activated while trying to HotSync with AvantGo. This somehow makes W2K lose all recognition of the USB cradles existence.

slowj don't give up...

Bon Voyage to a paragon of patience and technical savvy.

He will be missed.

Talking lol - > let the truth be heard.

hey..nice vocab...but yeah... the palm iiixe is 50 bonez less...same memory....AND..its upgradable.

cmon.

1) handsprings are not upgradable.

2) the ir port is to the side..so when you want to beam someone something..the person keeps moving around...

3) usb synching is sometimes buggy..and will sometimes just quit working.

4) usb drivers in win2k are not ready for the market.

5) handspring deluxe os is only 3.1 ..the latest is 3.5..but i guess you're stuck with it.

6) handsprings are too much of a hack.

7) handspring modules are a good idea..but they cost an arm and a leg. why would i buy an mp3 player for 270 when i can get a standalone for 199 ?

8) who wants to put a pda to their ears ? (visor phone)

9) the tech support guys hardly speak english.

10) the backlight is inferior to palms.

11) serial is the tried and true interface. why would i care about speed when i cant rely 100 percent on the thing ?

..lets get our priorities straight.

12) the cool colors make me feel like a liberal...but if i wanted that crap..i would buy an imac.

13) the snap on hardcover is lame..

14) hmm..what else....

15) the pda doesnt just drop into the cradle..you have to freaking "position" it.

16) "handspring"...kinky...i like it.

dont feel bad though..if you got suckered into one..just ebay it..dont sell it for less than 200.

I'm not sure I understand your "serial is better than USB" argument. By that logic, how woud any technology ever evolve? We should still be using vacuum tube based computers that are less powerful then a simple handheld calculator. I have used a win2k machine with USB hotsync from day one without a hitch. I can't imagine going back to the slow sync times of my old Palm devices! Have fun with your discontinued IIIxe, it's a great handheld.

Re: lol - > let the truth be heard.

Are you trying to beam something to Joe Cocker? Tell the person to stand still and......turn the Palm with his or her hand or better yet you can turn your hand.....real difficult.

As for USB and Win 2000, sounds like someone is in over their head and should try stepping back to an O/S you can understand...maybe Windows 3.11

Ok, everyone take a deep breath and "simma down now!". No reason to resort to namecalling here. Go to usenet for that.

Closing.
