Question Is the joke in my sig. bad taste?

Hi there,

Recently I received an email where somebody made a comment about the 'goto hell' joke in my sig.
I think this person did not understand the joke (GOTO, like in basic, the ancient programming language) and thought I really ment him/her to go to hell...

Is the joke too geeky and do people get offended by it?
Just wondering... I am not an american and sometimes the culture diffences cause problems....

Please help a silly dutchman who lives down under out in letting me know if I'm stepping over any lines...

If so: my sincere appologies and I'll remove it asap...
if not: keep smiling

FWIW, I think if you post places where non-programmers read (like here), you're going to find people who don't get the reference and will be put off.

I'm a developer and I'd classify the joke as merely cute.

Well, since you changed the formatting to all caps, it's more clear that it's a BASIC (or some similar language) reference. It makes more sense that way.

*shrug* I didn't really get offended by it before, but if I would have the "go to" part would have offended me more. I'm not fond of orders.

*shrug* (slight return) I am a USian, and sometimes the culture (and temperament) differences cause problems.

Well, I'm not usually much of an external smiler, but I'll continue to smirk ironically on the inside.

All of you can go to hell.

(Actually, I thought I was a geek, but I don't get the joke. Yes, I get the GOTO, but what's the funny part?)

That is probably because you are a DOS-dino and still programm in BASIC
Kidding aside it is merely a word joke about the old Basic programming language (allmost) nobody uses any more...
Must programmers started with Basic so comparing them with it would be an insult to their skill-level...

Make more sense now?

I know it is not the best joke in the world, but I quite liked it...

Another geeky joke (you've probably seen this one before) :
chmod + x /bin/laden

I even say a guy with a t-shirt with this text...

Another thing that makes it funny: A large portion of C and C++ programmers think goto is a sure sign of spaghetti (bad) programming. (At the very least, it shows a lack of understanding for exception handling). In my office, our code spec says that we are not to use goto in our code without a clear extenuating circumstance, and even then the reason must be well commented in the code.

Nobody has found a reason to use it yet.

I've seen 'rm -rf /bin/laden' more, personally.

Hmm... that's a good one.

Personally, I wasn't offended. I very rarely read sigs and when I do, I am smart enough to realize that it not directed to anyone in particular.

I think people who have nothing better to do than complain about somebody's .sig on an internet discussion board should:

code:
10 REM *** SHUT UP *** 20 GOTO 10

I mean, honestly.

Do not change it. It is extremely clever. You can't appease every prude out there that has had their sense of humor surgically removed.

In the day or two I've had to think about it, I keep coming back to my youth where I spent so much time keying in silly BASIC programs from Atari magazines ... entering GOTO hell when the frickin things wouldn't work right because I screwed up a number someplace.
