I've had my Visor for over a week now, and I must admit I'm more than a little disappointed with it's poor assembly.

First off, the LCD screen is crooked on my unit. The screen image is tilted to the left from the top. And the stylus! for god sake don't get me started on that piece of crap thing! I've already ordered the stylus pack from Handspring's web site.

I am debating my options at this point. I can't stand looking at the crooked screen. Yet, I know that if I call tech support they will say ship it back and we will replace it. But it will be Christmas 2002 before I ever see the replacement.

When my group and I launch our site next month(TheVisor.com) We will point out the Visor's flaws in our review.

I don't have mine yet, so I can't argue against your claims with any real experience, but I'd be willing to bet that you were just unlucky (as opposed to your problem indicating a trend). ALL of the other reviews I've heard or read of the Visor can't speak highly enough of the quality of the construction(though they do tend to diss the stylus). It does seem like Handspring is making good progress in fixing many of their problems, so it may actually not take that much time for you to get a replacement in the mail.

How crooked is it? Could you post a picture? Also, does the whole screen seem to be crooked - including the graffiti area?

I must be one of the few people who actually like the stylus. It is virtually identical to the stylus which came with the original Pilot. (The only differences are the color and the knurled area near the point.) I have already accidently put my Pilot stylus into the Visor and it seemed to fit just fine ... maybe slightly tighter.

No, not the graffiti area, just the viewable area. It's not extremely crooked, but it is noticeable. I say that because others who have looked at my Visor noticed it right away.

I have a legitimate reason to hate that stylus. It put a small scratch in the notepad area!

I love mine. I do not have any of the problems you mentioned (hence the love part). I do think you just have a bad unit. I did read about one post where a user got a CD replace very fast, I know: very different. but it is sure worth a try.

I am currently using a Palm V and to prevent scratches caused by small dust particles I have covered the graffitti area with 3M removable tape. I like the feel -- more like paper and pen and I like the fact that if it gets uneven from scratches I can peel it off and replace it with a new piece of tape (sure can't do that with scratches in the screen).

Eric - I tried my original Pilot stylus and it does fit tighter like you said. But considering how awful that original one was (I bought the black nail almost immediately), it's not much of an upgrade.

Skipper: I have always used that Scotch Removable Tape (Blue Box, the larger of the two sizes, btw). It really helps as far as recognition, smoothness, feedback/feel, and IMHO longevity of the input area.

Plus, depending on whether you want to sell your Visor once you've upgraded to something else, it's a lot nicer to be able to sell something that's been treated well and looks almost brand-new.

Hmmm. My visor's screen isn't crooked, the stylus seems to work ok, so I'm happy.

My guess is that your unit got UPSed (ie dropped about 30 feet and put back on the line)

Funny, my Palm V is made in the USA and it is a top quality product with no defects.

Foo,

Ask them to send the replacement immediately, give them your credit card info, and if your original isn't sent back within X number of days, they can charge you.

Epson did that for me with one of their small, color printers. That's service.

Or you could always go back to using your made in the USA Palm V. You have been pretty harsh about the only production problem I have heard about so far.

Keep in mind that Malaysia has the tallest buildings in the world, so their quality can't be that awful.

Besides, wasn't the Pinto made in the USA? And the Vega?

I still think it was dropped before you got it.

OK, OK,... I surrender!

Look, I was just expressing my unhappy vibes about my Visor. Would you be pleased to find the screen on your Visor was slanted?

And for the record I have to report that I, in fact, did not fix my Visor after all. The screen is still crooked. I thought I had the problem solved, but it was not to be. The LCD is still slightly off, and I see that the metal cage that holds the LCD unit moves from left to right slightly on the bottom. The only feasible solution at this point would be superglue. But I'm not about to do that.

Guess I'll have to leave it in the hands(forgive the pun) of Handspring's customer support.

Buck up, little camper. (name that movie) It seems that their customer support is improving. My most recent dealings with them have been very positive. I believe that all of the bad CSR stories will soon be an unhappy memory.
