Smile

I just bought a handspring 33.6 Modem at Staples for 49.90 before tax, no rebates or other such silliness.

Just checked out handspring's site and while they do have a $50 rebate, it didn't seem like this low price was going to be available via handspring any time soon.

Anyhow hope other people can find this good deal...

The Handspring Modem is not that great versus the other modems, but for $50, well that makes it a lot better.

Now anybody got good suggestions for ISPs for cheap in the downstate illinois area (Champaign). I got a cable modem for the desktop and no other modem...

likewise does anybody know a way to dial into a win98 PC and share the desktop's existing internet connection, that would be ideal for me.

good hunting,
KG

Thumbs up Cheap ISP

Thanks for the heads-up, kgruscho! I use AT&T WorldNet as an ISP for my Visor. They charge me $4.95 a month for 100 hours, and that's the cheapest that I could find. If you go with it, make sure that you check out this page for tips on setting up the service with the Visor:

Just went to Staples' website and they list it for $100. Maybe it's an in-store deal?

Living on the edge of civilization, we have no Staples and their website lists it at 99.90.

Which store is it so I can call them.

Thanks

I got at the staples on north prospect in champaign, illinois.

I think it must have been some sort of instore deal or something. They seem to be pretty good about having such deals.

hope somebody can find one.

thanks for the info on ISPs.

no they didn't tell me anything about a rebate or anything of that sort.

In the past when Handspring offers rebates, it's only when buying from handspring.

I figure that must be where the price break is coming from, possibly the store decided to just process the rebate themselves or something along those lines.

I've known walmart to do that itself on ocassion or at least to offer walmart versions, that are cheaper but don't have rebates.

anyhow I am really thinking by the fact that I am the only one who found this, it must be a local thing.

Not THAT I am complaining

I just found one for 49.90 also. The rebate is from handspring and requires a visor purchase. I live in oklahoma and had to call several stores before i found one in stock but they all told me the same price of 49.90. Thanks for the info!

Favorite Handspring Accessory

I got that direct connect cell cable which is by far my favorite handspring accessory to date. For only $35 I have access to the internet and email without having to plug in anywhere! No need to have a modem - and when your service providers' upgrade their system, you'll have 100kpbs service w/o having to buy anything extra!

What would be really cool - module idea-wise, is to modify the bottom half of a motorola startac so it can plug into the springboard slot. When plugged in - you can surf the web and check email - when unplugged you can use it like a normal phone. This would be the perfect balance of form and function. Unfortunately the handspring phone solution today isn't quite perfect because the phone module won't work when it's not plugged into the handspring - and the whole combination is a bit too bulky to always leave together...

Sorry to ramble on - just didn't know where else to blabber about my idea and comments...

You know you might want to suggest it to they guy who started the developer thread, he might be interested. Although I would be partial to the Samsung 3500 instead of the StarTac. Maybe it's possible...

Talking

Because there is no store in my area, I tried to order it from a store, but they would not sale it to me and ship it, had to go to website. It was listed there for 99.90 and I communicated with a rep. online (very cool), but they would not match it because the store nearest me (140 mile away) did show it on sale.

After e-mailing their customer service, they directed me to a number to call. She was very nice in saying that the guy on the website did not know what he was talking about.

When I called, I had to jump through a few hoops to get the 49.90 price, but I did get it. It should be here next Wednesday.

One humorous aspect was that to get free shipping I had to spend 50.00, so I bought a box of cheap pen (you need them anyway) and they are going to ship them in two separate shipments, doubling their shipping costs.

I haven't ever gotten separate shipments, but I do always need to buy those damn pens. I haven't even opened two of the blister packs yet. Especially since I write stuff on my Visor now, instead of with real pens.

The modem modules are in stock at several local Staples near me. The shelf tag says $128.99 (I think). I had them scan one at one Staples, and it scanned at $49.90. I have a $10 off on $40 coupon, good till 5/15, so am goung to think about it. But for $40 net it seems like a good deal.

Lightbulb

Just to let everyone know, the reason the modem is priced so low is because it's been discontinued. I work at staples and the modem is listed as "F" status which means thats it's "final mark-down". Which techincally means that the store can mark it all the way down to $0.50 if it so wanted to. With inventory coming up in june, alot of stores are setting up clearence tables, and marking everything to go.

But once the modems are gone, they are gone for good. Usually when merchandise is on on "final mark-down" every few weeks it goes down further and further down in price, usually down to 20% of it's original retail price. So if you want to get a real good deal, you might want to wait until next sunday (the 6th) and see what the price is then, but then you might risk losing the item.

Needless to say, being the top PDA salesman in my district (I love it when I finaly have something to brag about ), i have one of these babies set aside for when they hit the $20 mark.. or hell maybe my GM will let me take it home for cheap just to get it off of the shelves .

Anyways, I've revealed too many secrets for now.. of too the shadows with me...

Yep I got one

yep, they were marked down from $99 to $49. Got one.

By the way, "Anime Man", if the price falls further in the next 14 days, can I get a refund of the difference?

Yeah, I am well aware of why they are being discontinued. I am just happy that they are dropping the prices, because it really seemed absurd to have things like the thinmodem and thinmodem plus so close in price.

I am not too concerned about that, because it is a very standard modem, and whatever else may happen it retains the distinction of being a plain 33.6 modem that just happens to be in the form of a springboard.

I think it's cool that everyone can do cool things with their cell phones, but I'd like to point out that I don't have the monthly budget to get a cell phone nor do I have one, so...

as to the other people just getting the handspring modem, I got mine with a registered (to handspring) copy of One Touch mail 2.0... 2.1 exists but I have been unable to find any support for it or a place I can buy it or upgrade, anybody got any info, handspring said write jpsystems, jpsystems changed to jpmobile and won't reply to my e-mail...

kind of bites, and no I am not interested in buying another package at this point, I'd just like to get a less buggy version of what I got.

thanks,
Kg

You can as long as the price in the system falls, but not if the store decides to mark them down. So if the price drops to $39.50 next week, you can get back your $10.40, but if the store wants to get rid of them and slashes them down to $20, it falls under the stores special clearence clause and the price guarenty doesn't (or atleast shouldn't) apply.

But if you want to push it, talk to a manager and they might just let it slide and give you the refund off of their clearence price. Stores are trying to free up alot of shelf space, and the last thing they want to do is to keep clearance merchandise on the shelves.

I love you guys!!! I just bought two of these babies!!! The salesperson was surprised that they rung up at 49.90(they were still full price on the shelf)!

Anyone who is in the SF Bay Area...there are a couple left at the Staples in Foster City (Bridgepoint Shopping Center) near 101 & 92.

I bought one of these when they first came out and I like the fact that it's the only modem that doesn't drain power from the device. Even though it's a 33.6kbps modem, you can't beat 49.90.
