Ericsson T68 and Visor - problems with using IR for modem.

I have recently purchased a T68 Ericsson cell phone. I'm experiencing a problem making it dial out (using it as a modem) for dial-up networking. I am able to send/receive contacts to/from the phone using IR and when I go to Prefs>Network>Connect The phone even shows to dial out - but eventually I get an error message - 0x1102 Carrier not detected. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Are you using Connection as connect to modem or connect to phone? I used as connect to modem...

In Preferences ->Connection I made a new connection which I called IR Modem. Connection Method I selected is IrCOMM to Modem, Dialing is Touch Tone but I don't have any sort of Init String listed. I suspect it has something to do with the phone's network rather than the Visor but just wanted to check...

Yep, you may be right... Next question is: do you have data services in this account?

Hello!

Are you using an empty init string? Try it without aything.

Have you tried callind the number yourself from your mobile, and check if you can hear the usual modem noises? If not, do you get a short fast cycle of "tut" (number unobtainable)?

Are you using 57.600 speed (which would be good enogh) or higher? Can you bring it down in your Connection entry and try again?

Hmmm... Not much more I'd say...

I have tried it with empty init string - no luck . I have tried to dial the number directly using my cell phone- I get the nice squeeky sounds of an answering modem on the other side within seconds (2 maybe!) so I know that the the other side is answering. Now I just have to try it on a buddies T68 that's on VoiceStream and see if it'll make any difference... Thanks for the suggestions - if anyone else has any more - please let me know...

I have had a similar problem using a treo 90 with ericsson T39m, where the phone would begin dialing the access number than hang-up before the handheld logged on.

The problem seems to go away once I log onto the internet using the WAP browser of the phone. The problem doesn't return until I shut the phone off, than in order to use the treo 90 to connect to the internet I need to first connect than disconnect using the phones WAP browser. I haven't investigated why this is, but it has worked so far.

That reminds me... What's phone firmware version? My T39m is on R4A something. Take it to an Ericsson service centre and ask for an update (it's free - at least here in New Zealand).

Also, have you tried turning your phone off, removing the battery, and on again?

I had problems with older firmwares where my phone lost settings (bluetooth and others)...

Fortunately or not I have found out where the problem lies - AT&T GSM service does NOT support dial up data service . For whatever reason they have disabled this service and are not willing to re-enable it on case by case instances... I've tried the same phone (now unlocked ) with VoiceStream SIM card and was able to dial up and connect using IR and my Prism.
